@Gargron meanwhile on Mastodon I hear that ..."The moderator of @mastodon.social is hiding and limiting people's accounts for opposing the #genocide in #gaza done by #us and israel. What kind of bad, ignorant person do you have to be to call it a holocaust inversion?"

"A new dental scam is to pull healthy teeth to sell you expensive fake ones"Well us Brits have always been amazed at how white and pearly American teeth are but dentistry is the US has clearly gone down the same oligopolistic and #enshittification rabbithole that the rest of American medicine has - as already documented by #pluralistic."Many dental clinics that offer implants have consolidated into chains owned by private equity firms that have bought out much of implant dentistry. In health care, private equity investment is sometimes criticized for overtreatment and prioritizing short-term profit over patients."In the UK dentistry is increasingly privatised and our new Health Minister has been well bribed by the (often American) health companies to move even more of our health care to private sector contractors who will obviously take their cut. This will not end well.https://arstechnica.com/health/2024/11/more-dentists-are-pulling-healthy-teeth-to-sell-pricy-implants-experts-warn/#gsc.tab=0

@stux needless to say this is not how it's going to be as soon as they throw some yarrow roots, or consult a LLM, and come up with some new tariff numbers for electronics.https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/apr/14/trump-warns-exemptions-on-smartphones-electronics-will-be-short-lived-promises-future-tariffs-president-chinaBut yes, none of it makes any sense.

@selea I understand the sense in limiting registrations, particularly as you seem the only person running social.linux.pizza (?), and expanding indefinitely would imply the need to changing from that to having a team, and having to manage them has its downsides.Likewise I think medium size instances work better and add resilience to the Fediverse. However I'm a bit unclear how invitation only would work. When I joined in December 2022 I had to give a reason for choosing this instance and you then had to approve the application. If it was invitation only would you be the one to send invites, in which case I would imagine invites would be quite rare, or could existing members sponsor an applicant?

@ZySoua surprised the scammers aren't invoking the UK Online Safety Act as a reason to have to verify your age by giving them all your PI. After all Blue sky and Reddit does.I'm sure it won;t be that long in coming.

Can anyone help me with a strange 'social.linux.pizza' issue I have or has anyone else the same problem?I have three devices, a (Linux) PC, an Android phone and an Honor 12" Android Tablet. Both Tablet and Phone are on Android 14.I can see and post on 'social.linux.pizza' on the PC and phone. On the PC I use the advanced web interface (AWI), and on the Phone Tusky. On the Tablet, it also used to work but since yesterday, I can no longer access social.linux pizza. In the past I always used the AWI on the Tablet but I get the same issue if I try Tusky. On the Tablet I can dig and ping 'social.linux.pizza', so DNS seems to be be working but in the browser I get "Address not found". I normally use Firefox as my browser but the same issue occurs if I try using Chrome. If I type in 'linux.pizza' or 'blog.linux.pizza' or go to any other website I can connect OK.@selea

@selea No, no IPv6. Apart from anything else I don't think my ISP (Zen) support it and it's not configured in my router. And as far as I'm aware there have no configuration changes, at my end, between when it was working and now.

@selea possible. I found that switching to a different DNS provider has, for now at least, restored the connection.Google, Cloudflare and Quad9 were all not working for me. CleanBrowsing Family Filter (185.228.168.168) is.I trust its not a geoblocking thing due to the UK OSA.

@futurebird agree Kirk was not someone f any note. But whether his assassination turns out to be a big deal will depends on to what extent Trump and his cronies and billionaire masters try to use this as an excuse.Kristallnacht was justified as the response to the assassination of Ernst vom Rath, a not that important German Diplomat.

@abucci @davidgerard I am seeing some papers talking about AI probability thresholds, such that it if these are not met the AI reports it can't give a a certain enough answer.. However these mostly relate to classification AI inference and I can't quite see how you would come up with a suitable single metric for LLM reliability so you could force it to output 'I don't know'.

@simon_brooke this needs to be put in context. There used to be both a Magnox nuclear plant ( 2x470 MW) at Wylfa on Anglesey. There was also a big aluminium smelter there that used most of its base load electricity (not doubt on a sweetheart pricing deal that didn't reflect the costs of production). The Magnox nuclear plant used sea water for cooling. The latest proposal is to put a new modular nuclear there. They are talking about 3 470MW modular nuclear units initially. Lets assume that it can also use seawater: there is quite a good tide running off Angelsea so hopefully the heat added to the sea will get quickly dispersed. So they are now proposing to put a AI data centre there that will soak up the electricity locally. Probably also at a discounted price, as US Tech conglomerate need cheap prices, unlike human beings. No doubt it is sized at 3 units rather than 2 because they will need to use some of it for sea water electrolysis to produce drinking quality water to cool the data centre. Certainly not for local residents. They are also talking about building up to 6 more modules. I think they are a a bit short of places that will accept these nuclear plants, however modular and the locals are a bit short of jobs and will probably be happy to get the few local jobs required to install the pre-built modules at the site.Of course we wont get the nuclear plant generating till mid 2030's, at the earliest, so no doubt the AI bubble will have burst by then, so data centre will be derelict or not built at all and we will have had complete economic and climate collapse.

@SuperDicq @scy to make sure your librewolf is up to date you can add the librewolf repository to your sources.Instructions how to do it are here:https://librewolf.net/debian-migration/This should keep it up to date even though it isn't in the Debian repository.

@h4890 @ChrisMayLA6 well, Reeves wants growth and it's far easier to manufacture 'growth', particularly in financial services if you can just make the numbers up.Of course it won't last, but in the short term...
