@clive wow I have never seen a recommendation algorithm described as “a mathematical version of your taste” before.I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to describe it in any other way now!

@aral @clive also it doesn’t fully get to the essence of how an algorithm tries to manipulate behavior Most simple explanations never feel sharp enough

@clive @aral even this comment is so well-written, how do you do this magic?

@clive “But what we’re now realizing is that actually computation is not just a way to think about things: it is at a very fundamental level what everything actually is.” Thanks for sharing, this is a fascinating read.

@clive @PhilMoscovitch incredible piece. This quote made me particularly sad:“My job is to sound as much like a real human being as I possibly can without doing any of the real human things that might strip away the content’s calibrated optimization: no non-sequiturs, no unexpected turns of phrase, no unnecessary off-topic information, no mentioning competing brands or products. Nothing too interesting or boring, too like or unlike anything else.”

@clive careful, Clive, you're providing me with ammunition against my husband. He constantly complains about me hoarding books that I don't read.

@brewsterkahle yeah the loss of tweets for so many accounts has been hard to deal with. On my agency’s site (and in any client work going forward) we no longer embed tweets, but instead we take screenshots and add a clickable link on that image to the original tweet. This way we don’t lose that record if something happens on Twitter. Personally, I still reference my downloaded twitter data archive all the time, but it doesn’t show threads so often locating the correct order is broken.
