I hate my country so much sometimes, two American friends, got an unfortunate Mexican greeting by police officers, they were robbed.... luckily they didn't take too much but fucking hell....

@wholemilk In Mexico it's not uncommon for a police officer to stop you for no good reason just to get a bribe out of you. It has happened to my family several times. Police officers like to stop people who are out of state and especially people with American license plates because they suspect they'll get a big juicy bribe. They literally just make shit up and threaten to take you in, so it's better to just give them a bribe. Luckily they're spineless they usually dont hurt you.

@wholemilk@linux.pizza Police from small towns (municipal police), Police from the Estado de Mexico, Mexico City Cops, and Mexican local highway police (transitos) are all very corrupt and bribe hungry.Only trustworthy police and law enforcement in Mexico are other Mexican state police (varies), Federal Police, the National Guard, the Army and the Marines. (and the police for a few of the richest mexican cities)

@wholemilk I've never seen it happen, but from what I've heard it varies from situation to situation.It's complicated :') the easiest solution really is to give them a bribe (called mordidas colloquially) and they'll let you go. Alternatively you can tell them to give you the fine that they were threatening with. And they may give it to you or may just let you go. If they ask you to follow them to the police station from a threat..... the result can vary from that.

Ideology means almost nothing in Mexican politics. The supposedly left wing party just had a bunch of people defect from the supposedly neoliberal party to join them. These individuals literally attacked each other but now they're good guys according to the government. Some political analysts say they're joining them so they can have immunity for past corruption and even a chance at getting a position as ambassador This BS is insulting and infuriating.

2024 is going to be a very hard year if it doesn't rain more. The reservoirs/dams are at a 20 year low. Last January I had normal water service, but for the last few months I've only had running water for half of the day. The water shortage will get much worse if it's another hot and dry year, which means I might go **multiple** days without running water in the summer. This is so depressing and stressful, I'm worried for how bad it might get. 😔 #climatecrisis #mexico
