@technomancy @cwebber * similiarly, the toolkit around emulation or building harnesses has improved: VMs/sandboxes are not only commonly used but code has adapted to living in these spaces -- a program that doesn't run in docker or virtualized hardware isn't much use thse days

@technomancy @cwebber * there's increasing commonality between well-funded commercial research goals and the needs of alternative platform makers: e.g. the porting of chrome to Fuchsia, Google's cap-based OS, Microsoft and ARM's funding of OS ports and toolkit support for CHERI https://msrc-blog.microsoft.com/2022/01/20/an_armful_of_cheris/

@technomancy @cwebber * there are also some hardware trends that are promising -- on one hand we now have a handful of promising open hardware platforms (and no more than a handful!) which gives some hope to having a limited support matrix. on the other, the chip building stack is opening up, promising some ability to bend the hardware to the needs of our goals instead of struggling the other way

@technomancy @cwebber I think the biggest social challenge, as you note, is how hard it is to get everyone to focus on one "perfect" platform rather than everyone pursuing their own utopian dream setup. This certainly divides resources and attention. It's the classic problem of decentralized development! But that just means we must pursue the hard work of connecting and co-operating, just as the builders of open systems before us did

@veer66 @technomancy @cwebber is this because the wordbreaker in libicu/harfbuzz is deficient, or are you trying to replicate its functionality to make it easier to improve further by external developers?

@strypey i'm open enough to the idea that somethung has changed, but tbh i think a lot of this is implicit knowledge that is not easily transferred. mainly it is easy to see the flaws and limitations in a model that has succeeded relatively well, without knowing about all the models that failed, or were self-limiting

@strypey there's also a thing that i really need to write up about how because FLOSS looks like it prospered because of copyright, it is hard to recognize that it was intended as a way to limit the damage of software copyrightSo people think oh maybe we can solve other problems with more clever copyright tricks! which is like either no, copyright is probably not that powerful, and it is probably a bad idea on finding ways to make it that powerful

There are some travel scholarships (flights, accomodation, food!) open for #IPFS Camp, which is in Lisbon this year, October 28-30 (https://2022.ipfs.camp/ ). Applications here, by Sept. 15: https://airtable.com/shrd4kSljHYHxmU1b . If you're doing something cool with IPFS, or interested in integrating it with your coolness, please consider. If you're from a community that you're guessing is underrepresented, I will help you with your application! I will help you with your application anyway!

@cy @unfa the IPFS devs do know a lot about these projects, and co-operate with at least two of the current ones. Really if you look at the original proposal, though, https://arxiv.org/pdf/1407.3561.pdf the direct ancestry is through the academic and FLOSS DHT and merkle DAG work, i.e. BitTorrent and Git.Most of the public IPFS network and transport doesn't use the web browser or websockets, just the js-ipfs implementation, and that's because of the limitations of running within a browser.

if you've struggled a bit with the weight of the standard #IPFS client, go-ipfs (kubo), take a look at https://iroh.computer/ -- it's a more modular, independent implementation, written in #rust.Just had its first release announced at #ipfscamp !

@simon I have a question! ✋When you set up something like this, do you anticipate it running forever? And if so, do you set up something else to check if it breaks, or for you to remember to check in on it?

to get to sleep the other day i imagined the opening film sequence for Iain M Banks's #PlayerOfGames and that led me to re-read it. (Spoiler: it is good.)After that I figured I'd use my literary momentum to read something fancy, which is why I am now burrowing through #WarAndPeaceI'm about halfway through book 1 and so far Leo Tolstoy seems really intent on describing everybody's upper lips. @lizzard says this is also a Thomas Hardy thing, so maybe it was just what everybody was into?

Ever struggled with using #ipfs or #libp2p behind a NAT? ProbeLab (https://research.protocol.ai/blog/2022/introducing-probelab/ ) is running a survey of how successful LibP2P's hole-punching is , and is looking to get folks to run a simple client in December on their home network. Code and explainers here: https://github.com/dennis-tra/punchr/releases/tag/v0.9.0
