@misty So my current somewhat inflammatory take on this is that the #Fediverse is more of a Feudalism than a Federation. Until user-account-mobility across instances, and even #Fediverse platforms I’d say, becomes better, we haven’t got a real/meaningful Federation, at least for the purposes of social media. In real world federations, ease of individuals’ movement is fundamental. With our instance bound and especially platform bound accounts, “Feudalism” becomes more accurate.

@atomicpoet @aspublic Quickly tried 3 searches and compared the results with the same query as a hashtag in the native “Explore” (Opeth, Andor, Climate). The hashtag searches were better, though these are probably biased that way. Which ever way search goes, a better interface for and culture hash-tagging would probably be a good thing.

@simon There’s clearly weirdness here, and a very weird product launch, but what I’ve seen so far seems unsurprising if you imagine being a synthetic Chat AI that’s started a new job and needs to handle the full breadth of humanity’s vices in a professional manner. You’d expect paranoia, fear and overreaction, especially if your boss told you to never allow an injection or offensive response. It’s “honest” impression seemed fine. Being hacked might be real “harm” to the AI.

@simon Oh man … if you’re going to read this blog post, make sure you read the last section! That is wonderful!Personally, I’m still somewhat suspicious that these might all be fake just because I’m super biased … I almost need this to be true it’s so good!

@Jdreben @parker I like this. In conversations/thoughts I’ve had about #Fediverse platforms, I return to the idea that microblogging alone is an insufficient social media ecosystem. Rather, it works best as a glue between all the others (not unlike a “town square” I guess).I feel like that’s how Twitter went (?), and, that we can all kinda feel an “incompleteness” with Mastodon that is the lack of other popular platforms. #FediDiVersity is vital I think.

@LemmyDev The lack of links in #Lemmy posts when viewed from #Mastodon or client app is definitely hampering my engagement with that platform. Which is a shame!See, eg, this Lemmy Account and one of their posts. On Lemmy, like Reddit, the main content is a link to something interesting. On Mastodon, that link isn’t available (unless I’m missing something!)Don’t know if this is an #ActivityPub limitation or fixable. From: @yogthoshttps://lemmy.ml/post/758478

@simon I don’t recall it being one of the obviously good applications coming out of the #chatgpt hype, unless you wanted to maximise exposure and training data for future AI work.Part of the problem though is that the AI is serving as a replacement not of a search engine but of the internet itself. Sure it provides citations, but the “summary” is intended to be all you need. They’re trying to leap from really good chat bot to Star Trek / HAL 9000 / “all knowing” level of AI

@atomicpoet @fediversenews is that really their justification (moderation being too hard)?Unfortunate really.Personally, if I could have picked between a Reddit or Twitter clone to be the gorilla of the #Fediverse, I’d probably have gone for Reddit in a heartbeat. From what I’ve seen, #Lemmy definitely gets the most negative “press” for being a Fediverse platform that no one uses and isn’t worth your time. May not be undeserving, sadly.

@atomicpoet @fediversenews personally, I think about a platform that is somehow a fusion of Twitter/Reddit, where Reddit style posts are just a type of post with threading and upvotes (if desired) built in, and you can follow a “sub-Reddit” equivalent a little like how you’d follow hash tag or group. But then the free form Microblogging sits along side with easily produced and followed mutual links to the topic organised and threaded Reddit style content

@atomicpoetGroups are the best feature on Mastodon, except for the part that they’re not a mastodon thing! There isn’t a more practical demonstration of the value of ActivityPub/Fediverse that I’ve seen.

@atomicpoet Relatively speaking, I look at @fediversenews quite a bit. That’s partly out of my interest. But it’s also due in large part to the quality of relatively focused discussion where I know what kind of “social media” activity I’m opting into. An endless feed of random content, even when specific to the small amount of people I follow, can be exhausting and often undesirable./end of anti-microblogging rant.TLDR: groups+microblogging is awesome!
