Ok, nice little social media experiment, how does the fediverse fare during an earthquake?A midnight earthquake just hit my home city, which basically never gets earthquakes. Probably no damage at all from this one, but we all definitely felt it, which is unusual for us! (Prob ~4 on Richter scale)Where did I go first to check if others felt it? NGL, the place I went last time there was a tremor … Twitter. And to be fair, on the top of my feed were posts from people I follow (who aren’t here) that live in my home city, tweeting about it, including links to official reports. This was very nice, as this time I was scared and thought my apartment building might be in trouble. I quickly check #mastodon and #calckey. Nothing in timelines. Not surprising, I don’t really follow anyone or many that live in the same city as me. Searching, mastodon’s hashtag search does ok, and surfaces a bot or two that also confirm the quake (@lastquake@masto.ai). But not many people, I’m not really finding a conversation. Also searching for something by a hashtag you don’t know exists takes a few steps. This is on an instance with ~50k users. #Calckey’s full text search though (on calckey.social)? Quicker. Just typed earthquake without worrying about hashtags. And better results. More people were brought up, which is kinda what you’re after from social media during an event … reassurance. It was also surprising, as calckey has only ~2k users and therefore smaller visibility of the fediverse, but still gave me more connectivity just through search than my bigger mastodon instance. Which is really an interesting demonstration of how hashtags can be problematic. Plenty of people were reaching out, asking “anyone feel that earthquake?”, they just forgot or didn’t think to use a hashtag, and so couldn’t find me through mastodon. And why would you in a (slightly) nervous situation like that. “Hmmm, is this the best hashtag, do you think people will search for it … I should probably check if it exists first?” … is not a thought goes through your mind.I basically never visit Twitter since I left, but this was a nostalgic little episode. It was nice to see the fediverse wasn’t really behind big social. Though the lack of discovery facilities on mastodon really did show themselves here.

@tedb@gigaohm.bio I'm pretty central so I think I was close enough to feel it pretty strongly. My apartment building certainly felt like something serious happened to it (which was the concerning bit, as if it weren't a quake then it was probably more serious).

@atomicpoet Wait, what ... no espresso? Is it a North American thing to call espresso French Press? Last time I got nerdy about coffee, I recall french press being very distinct from espresso.Do North Americans just not do espresso at all?!Also, if it isn't clear, my vote is espresso! It can be done easily at home with manual equipment like the the Flair ... lovely coffee!

@matthieu_xyz @rysiek@mstdn.social @jeff@honeytree.social So this looks like yet another example of why being bound to an instance can be so bad for business. Seems that what’s really lacking to get institutions on to the fediverse is easier self hosting solutions so that they’re not subject to blocks caused by people they have no control over. Despite your plea, they’re gonna get blocked, then confused about it and quickly fatigued by the whole fediverse thing.

@atomicpoet@atomicpoet.org @shoq@mastodon.social What business model does BS have? If they're going to run ads or something similar, then it stands to reason that they could get profitable enough to build a large enough developer team to start to the substantiate the hype about their feature velocity. And to @shoq@mastodon.social 's point, if they get (and keep!) a large user base quickly, the comparisons could quickly become a moot point. Not saying there isn't hype or that BS will win, but this sounds like the kind of argument that could end up not meaning anything in 6-12 months.

@fishidwardrobe@mastodon.me.uk @piratepost@poliverso.org @strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz @lealternative@mastodon.uno But, in one sense, yes: this is a second hand account of Lemmy I have not verified. You should also factor THAT into your equations.THis is the problem with the sort of "smear" or "negativity" habbits on here (and no doubt other/all social media). That it's almost all hearsay is never stated nor understood. And the fact of the matter is that we all love to get negative about things, so it spreads like fire.On twitter when taking down the corrupt and powerful, that's probably a good and useful weapon. On the fediverse about other instances and platforms?!?! Probably just a plain destructive behaviour to be frank with you.If we're all too eager to make sure we're "in the good place" by shooting down anything that could possibly "from the bad place", the problem is we may just end up with not much of a place in the end.
