@gme I completely agree with you on that, but that decision was outside of my realm of responsibility. It makes for some interesting latency at times.

@gme worker I’ve never understood this. Yes, I get tinkering with it to try to make it work but there should be little expectation that it’ll actually work

I know this is odd, but I find many of the negative reviews of medication on WebMD to be hilarious. So many exclamation points by so many people. Adjectives denoting hysteria. I know people are sharing their negative experiences but I find it all hysterical.

I don't know how UNIXy people can do anything on Microsoft's Powershell. Yes, there's some UNIX type commands in there and I know there are other tools for Windows, but if I have a default setup and I go to Powershell I want to be able to do more than just ls or ssh

I wish nothing but the best outcome for the folks in Hurricane Ian’s path. But one has to wonder, with the Governor of Florida doing such horrible things all the time, are we surprised that God flung a very powerful hurricane at the state?

I’m distro hopping for the first time in a long while. I’m giving Ubuntu 22.10 beta a try on my ThinkPad T460s.

@gme I've played with System76 on several occasions and have no complaints at all. I'll eventually buy a System76 machine and go with the provided Pop_OS on it.

The number of unsolicited political text messages coming to my phone has convinced me to never, ever contribute to or share my phone number with a political action committee ever again.

On the search for an IBM Model M SSK (spacing saving) variant keyboard. I really want the original clicky back in my life.

When it comes to the history of computing, posts like this in random spots on the Internet frustrate me. The 1960s? There is no way NCR would have a cash register like this in the 1960s. The NCR 2152 was introduced around 1980 and was a popular selection by department stores, including Sears, Caldor, and the higher end department stores like Kaufmanns throughout the 1980s.#retroComputing #retro_computing

A co-worker just accepted a new job offer. “I don’t know the languages they use, they don’t care, I’m working remote and I got a 30% salary bump”. I might be working on my resume.

My Pop!_OS experience continues to be wonderful. The auto tiling is a godsend and the stability of the platform, even on my older ThinkPad T460s, is wonderful. I'm really pleased with this setup. When it's time to get new hardware I will definitely make System76 the first line in my consideration list.

Back in its heydey, Kmart's IT Infrastructure was a mess until they hired an outside CIO to come in and fix things. From the late 1980s to the end of the 90s, their IT infrastructure was "solutions based" and not "vendor based". I believe most of it ran on UNIX. I've always liked that solutions based approach; any hardware/OS combo should be able to get to your data. I fly with Foreflight, but I can get the same data through skyvector. My task lists can be opened with any text editor.

Back to the Kmart scenario, stores across the country had differing cash register and point of sale equipment, NCR, IBM, Fujitsu, etc. But they all could get to the same data. That's the important part. Any software package that locks you into a specific hardware solution is going to get you in the end.

Today in my “cleaning up my computing space” I’m deleting any RSS feed from my aggregator that only shows a summary and then “head to the web page to read the complete article”. That’s not the way RSS is suppose to work.

@lauren I completely understand this. I have used Mastodon for a long while and while I enjoy my experience, there are times when I refrain from participation due to “cultural” differences
