@HebrideanHecate It is so awful but when women say sex matters then the police prioritise how TRAs feel. However when people shout in public and call for Jihad against Jewish People then what matters is a nuanced understanding from a specially brainwashed err... trained police specialist of what they were saying.

After some disturbing reports and images from yesterday's pro Palestine demonstrations in London it was very different today.There was a powerful demonstration outside Parliament featuring baby buggies with photos of the missing/hostage Israeli children taken by Hamas.There was also a very well attended and peaceful vigil in Trafalgar Square which was also focused on the hostages and asking that they are safely returned home. There were no calls for Holy War, death to other people or sex segregation. I am glad that my city allows different protests, demonstrations and vigils but I think the Met Police made some mistakes yesterday especially by allowing the Hizb ut Tahrir rally and the UK Government should look again at banning that group. Whatever your cause if you want to peacefully protest you also need to boot out violent extremists when they show up at marches and rallies. Just to be clear I mean actual violent extremists who are calling for Jihad, deaths to all Jews or other explicit incitement to violent. I do not mean people who you disagree with and have different political allegiances.

@Flick I love mushrooms but oyster mushrooms are not my favourite as they can be a bit bland and/or rubbery. I sometimes use them in other dishes but with added rehydrated porcini mushrooms to add flavour. If they are a decent size you can slice and spice them up to make them a pulled pork alternative or mushroom shawarma. Another option is to make a tangy batter and deep fry them.

Very sad update from the friend I met up with last weekend. After just a few weeks at university her 18 year old has returned home having decided to take to gap year and restart her course at a different university next year.She was overwhelmed by the reaction to what is happening in Israel/Gaza and the pro Palestine supports and events being organised. As a Jew she felt very much in a minority and for example was the only Jew in her main study group. Students in her hall of residence were also putting up pro Palestine posters and in some cases anti-Semitic ones too. She was scared of expressing an opinion or of an escalation which would lead to violence.She was not directly targeted but as we all know there are many ways to intimidate and silence people without actually naming, threatening or physically hitting people.I am so sad for my friend and her daughter. They are now planning how she can have a great gap year and go back to uni next year. I hope to meet them both soon to find out what they have planned.

@HebrideanHecate Yes it is. I suspect other students who go directly from Jewish schools to university will have the same shock given what is happening right now. The universities should be supporting all students including those who are Jewish but instead most of them are more interested in woke virtue signalling.

I am sure it is not just the BBC but many news channels which got this so horribly wrong. They all need to do better.We need all the hostages to be released and then after listening to their stories make decision about what has happened.All we can say at this point is that over 200 people were violently abducted, many were injured and all are being held against their will. I am very glad for the few who have been released but the outrage is not over until all are safe and free. Hamas are playing games and I hate that so many seem enthralled by that.

Good Book Club meeting tonight. We had a great discussion about our book of the month which was Ann Patchett's The Dutch House and also an unexpected TERF talk.One of the women has a child at nursery and has been told that there is a another child there who is gender fluid. She was told by staff in a "we all need to support this" way but she is not happy. She does not want her 3 year old to have to cope with this and is looking for a new nursery but that is not easy.Another person then started a conversation about the horror of unisex school toilets for teenage girls. Everyone wanted single sex spaces. I said very little at first and then when I started to add a few examples of known problems caused by gender ideology they were horrified.These are not women who spend a lot of time online and are not part of any GC or TERF movement. They are mostly working mums with school age kids and book club is our monthly get together to chat about a good book and drink some wine. It gives me hope that conversations like this are happening and that most people still have some common sense. They just need to be bolder about challenging those spouting nonsense.

Christmas book ideas needed.Does anyone have suggestions for books to read over Christmas? It doesn't have to be about Christmas but just something that makes you think about it and is good to read over the holidays. Not the cheesy Christmas romances which are a plenty but just good books with something that links to the season.One of mine is "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" by C.S.Lewis. I got it as a Christmas gift in a lovely boxed set of all the Narnia books when I was six and a good chunk of the book is set in an icy winter. I also associate Little Women with Christmas and another favourite is Agatha Christie's "Hercule Poirot's Christmas". It is perfect for an afternoon snuggled into a soft blanket on the sofa and with some hot chocolate.What are your recommendations?

So a great Let Women Speak event took place at Speaker's Corner today expressing solidarity with all women and girls. KJK was her usual self and Helen Joyce, Maya Forstater, Vaishnavi Sunder and Kara Dansky were amongst the more well known speakers but as usual many more spoke up, powerfully and from the heart. On the other hand in the last 24 hours WPUK put out a mealy mouthed statement about the Israel-Palestine conflict which barely mentions the Hamas terrorist attack on the 7th and goes straight into both-sideism. Also one of their directors, Lucy Masoud, posts some horrific posts on X and has now deactivated her account. I have had a number of disagreements with WPUK and the Radical Notion feminists but try to be fair about the good work they have done and continue to do. I will never fully align with their leftist/Marxist analysis and views but as a grown up I expect to have political disagreements and welcome polite debate. However, the posts by Lucy Masoud are from from polite debate and need to be addressed. Even if she was posting as an individual and not as a representative of WPUK do they share her views? Was she involved in writing the WPUK statement? They despise racism on the right so I hope they also take a strong stance against racism on the left but sadly I suspect all we get is silence or whataboutery. They seem to suffer from the same smug self righteousness of the left wing gender identity zealots and just disagree with Owen Jones et al on the one issue of sex based rights.

I will never understand people who carry family grudges into their wills. I am dealing the fallout from two wills of close relatives where family members are being treated very differently, sometimes with reason but mostly it seems random. It is upsetting and just leaves a final bad memory. There is a lot of hurt and pain. It really isn't about the moneyMy will is already very simple (being poor helps with that!) and I am going to check it to make sure it is as fair as possible to those I am likely to leave behind. I am also going to appoint an executor who is not a beneficiary. My poor cousin is so stressed out about having to deal with such an awful mess and is in the middle of so much upset.

Very sad to be sharing bad news with my cat loving friends on Spinster.My lovely Old Cat died peacefully at home this morning. She was 20 years old so she had a long, good life and thankfully was still perky right up until yesterday when she stopped eating and drinking. This morning she didn't want to be moved and I knew she was dying so I got her comfortable on my bed and we calmly lay together for a couple of hours until until the end.She was my beautiful wild cat with a big soft centre and I am going to miss her so much. The photos show her aged 12 weeks with her sister and aged 20 in her favourite spot on a heat reflecting blanket on the back of an old armchair.
