@simon this is great, Simon. I find it’s so easy to spend a day working on something that you end up changing later and then loose track of all the effort and discovery that lead to that breakthrough. This is a great way to document that process and leave a trail for yourself and others to pick up on. Thanks for sharing!

I was quite angry and upset when Elon bought #twitter. I also have a friend that worked there who was immediately laid off, which added to my anger and frustration.As stories came out about how everything lead up to the takeover I was disgusted to learn just how absolutely narcissistic the whole deal was… he basically bought it because the current execs weren’t promoting him enough and as the largest shareholder he felt entitled to get special treatment on the platform.So I left.I started up my own masto server (which is hardly being used) and opened an account on infosec.exchange In the beginning I spent a lot of time on here. Almost as much as I did on the bird site. But over time something magical happened… I gave up my social media addiction.So, I still log in now and then to see what’s going on in this little corner of the fediverse. I follow some of the best people I had come to trust after nearly fifteen years in the other place.There is some drama now and then, but generally very little comparatively. But the best part is it is just so much easier to ignore and just do other stuff and get on with more important things in my life.So, this is one of those “not what I wanted but turned out for the best” posts.I am still angered by the wanton destruction of this whole fiasco, and I am still sad at the loss of community that happened to so me and so many people who spent years of our lives on that platform…However, I am living a better life. Maybe correlation rather than causation but it really brought home for me how we must rely on our real connections with people and how so much of the digital universe is just ephemeral noise.Anyway, if you are feeling frustrated it is totally legit, and I just want you to know that this can all lead to better things. @futurebird @AbyssalRook the part that really gets me is that they gatekeep and then get a sense of superiority about their knowledge, which ends up blinding them to ways that they may be (and probably are) wrong or missing things! Formal mathematics is ultimately just another way of thinking, and when you get deep enough into theory, specifically Gödel’s incompleteness theorem, one should be humble about the limitations inherent within it as a discipline (not mention prodigies like Ramanujan who defy all categories of what somebody who is supposed to be good at it look like)

I’ve started to post something and deleted it at least a dozen times over the last week. I’ve read so many articles outlining people’s takes, opinions, and post-mortems, but the gnawing feeling in my gut just hasn’t gone away.@pluralistic has been beating the drum about enshitification for a while now, and Zitton does a really good job here pointing the finger exactly where it should be pointed.https://www.wheresyoured.at/lost-in-the-future/This is it, the social contract is broken, #enshitification was THE decisive factor in the outcome of this election.Used to be a time when the bottom line of a company was connected to providing value for its customers and its not just its shareholders. Now they take our money, give us garbage in return, and use the money we gave them to elect the fasch who will help them keep doing it.My hope is that they don’t realize that their arrogance is radicalizing people… that they are completely suprised when one day they wake up and everyone has stopped believing in them and stopped using/buying their products, people no longer covet getting a job at their companies.There are two words in my mind that keep coming up:1) DivestureWhen you have the opportunity for discretion, use it by refusing to invest in these companies with your time and money. Find alternatives if you can, or accept a sacrifice if you can afford to do it and there are no other options (also understand I don’t want or expect you throw yourself under the bus in the process).2) SolidarityThis is a word I’ve heard many times in my life but I didn’t really understand what it meant until quite recently. That is by design. Solidarity is the thing that these asshats fear the most. It’s a word that can’t be appreciated fully without the context of class struggle, without the realization that we are born into a conflict between labor and capital that began long before us.It comes down to standing with your peers, not your oppressors. Stop believing in the lie that you can “become like them”. Recognize that hoarding wealth and status is actually evil, that by pursuing that path you are reinforcing and compounding those evils (and becoming evil yourself).If that’s what you really want then there is nothing I can say to change your mind and this post isn’t meant for you. Go ahead and be evil. For the rest of you, JOIN A UNION if you can. And don’t just join, get involved so that the leadership that is supposed to represent you does their job of representing instead of colluding with management.I’ll sign off by saying that I am in Toronto and I would really like to connect with more like minded people on a more personal level than mastodon allows. @futurebird i’m coming to this realization myself. and even though i’ve moved to a much less toxic social network, most of my connections here are weak (i don’t have much contact with the people here outside of the bubble) and i catch vibes too easily.gotta be centered and healthy in my own head space before i listen to other people opinions otherwise it’s too easy to just take them on subconsciously (or be irritated by them subconsciously). In practice this means not spending too much time here either.thanks for the insight. Have an awesome day!

I don't share my work very often, but especially because you mention cuneiform, I actually have "invented" a new zero, called zo, in a modern base-60 number system, inspired by the Babylonian system and Wu Xinghttps://github.com/hyxos/hyxos_numerals/blob/main/GRAMMAR.mdThere is a very poorly written and not maintained api to generate the glyphs at https://hyxos.io/docsI'm plodding away in my spare time trying to turn it into something more usable to make it more accessible for everyone... up to this point it's mostly been used by my wife and I to build card game prototypes. I'm hoping to release a much more polished glyph builder this year, I really want to make a typeface, and oh boy, that is a deep, deep rabbithole
