And finally, mid to late 70's styling inspiration for American cars were BRUTALIST BRICKS, requiring everything to be very RECTANGULAR, down to the steering wheel itself. Bricks are not particularly aerodynamic.

At the height of the malaise era, some big land yachts reached nearly 2 tons, with barely 70 horsepower engines to pull them. A horse-driven wagon has a better power to weight ratio!

Ah, that time someone reported a dav1d bug, and with some debugging, in a few hours, we figured out the reporter's hardware had a real honest proper silicon bug with an instruction.

My x86 buying philosophy: if it hasn't got at least 16 all-performance non-NUMA cores, real 512-bit vector units, and it can do at least 3 dword vector shuffles in a cycle, I'm not buying. My arm64 buying philosophy: if it hasn't got at least SVE2, full mainline kernel support, is not a fucking rock, consumes more than 10 watts of standby power, I'm not buying. My risc-v buying philosophy: if it hasn't got float vectors, bitops, at least 256-bit wide ALUs, consumes more than 15 watts of standby power, I'm not buying. My SuperH buying philosophy: sure.My Loooooooooongson buying philosophy: if it's free, comrade. My Elbrus buying philosophy: I like state secrets. My <hey, check out this really neat ISA> buying philosophy: go to a garbage bin, throw it away, and rummage around for some old x86 laptop.

@linear Very hardcore. Make sure to join an IRC network too for maximum roleplay.I suggest nasm, because I like it, and it was released in the mid-90's. Though I'd suggest using the newest version with the backstory that you went on the Ballmer peak and coded it all in one night. As for docs, look through the kernel drivers.

The talentless hacks at Fraunhofer/Dolby have published a list of patents Opus infringes. It's a list of 50 year old patents that keep getting necromanced by their resident necromancer just to extort money.8595019 for example. It's a patent for an audio encoder, working in the frequency domain, using an overlap, supporting transients (many smaller transforms instead of a large one), encoded with a codebook.Filed in 2011.THIS DESCRIBES EVERY SINGLE LOSSY AUDIO CODEC EXCEPT OPUS, AND WAS ALREADY OBSOLETE BY 1995!Opus doesn't use codebooks. It doesn't need codebooks. It has something like a codebook, but it's just a multidimensional vector index compressed into 32 bits, not an index into an array of quantization coefficients.

Patents are all bullshit. They belong on the internet as much as intellectual property laws do. Or pop-up ads. Or pop-up consent panels for ads. Or cookie banners. Or censorship. Or those 1-pixel large tracking dots. Or IPv4.

Capture cards then: blurred output due to analogue video, low latency because buffers were expensive, perfect audio and video sync.Capture cards now: blurred output due to mandatory 422 subsampling (or worse, mjpeg!), huge latency due to tons of copies everywhere and v4l2 being shit, audio and video desync because 2 different frameworks are used with totally different timestamps. We're really good at this, super good.

At this point it's better to just capture the screen and audio, encode them and transmit them over ethernet. Better yet, direct USB-C as uncompressed streams!

Bing (and therefore DDG) seems stuck in some demented Redmont turboconservative upper-class suburban bubble.Besides ruthlessly filtering anything slightly illegal, or anything slightly out of the norm (*chan, *cracks, *asm), it's first thought for any prompt containing "cheating" is "Is your partner cheating on you?", and it's first prompt for any acronym is to find the nearest mainstream company with those initials, as if you should invest. If I could lobotomize over TCP/IP, I'd start with those who think it's okay for search engines to only care about the real world rather than the other way around.

I'd like for a Rust fanatic to ask me why I find writing C, fixing memory a̶n̶d̶ ̶t̶h̶r̶e̶a̶d̶i̶n̶g̶ issues fun, only for me to look at them like they're pure filth and violently ignore them, as I like writing assembly even more fun.

Old MD code written in FORTRAN77 that you found on a 5-inch floppy diskette fallen behind some shelves in the physics department...which has cryptic references to "the great boltzmann balancer", "pulsar overlords", "he4 ivory" and "FRB 140514 communique"

@lanodan @phoenix Neither our flac encoder nor encoder supports outputting 8-bit PCM, only 16 upwards. The codec itself doesn't care about bit depth, it encodes bits until there are no bits left, so decoders and encoders are free to pick whatever they like, as long as no trimming is done.
