Yesterday, I was also greeted by this Common Yellowthroat, a widespread "New World" warbler found throughout North America, with northern populations that overwinter in Central and South America, and with rare migrants making it across the Atlantic. Despite its large range, this warbler has declined in numbers by an estimated 26% between 1966 and 2019 largely due to habitat loss and decline of insect prey. This female or juvie was bulking up on insects among the groundsels along the main footpath and on the footpath , itself, and allowed me to get quite close (this has been true of other warblers, as well).#nature #NaturePhotography #birds #Wildlife #naturecommunity #photography #birding #birdphotography #warbler

Peregrine hoping to grab a meal from an Osprey, an interaction known as "kleptoparasitism" (seems like the poor Ospreys get it from all sides!). Note how the Osprey shields its prey in typical raptor fashion. We left before the denouement -- probably either the Osprey let its guard down, or the Peregrine gave up. Or maybe a bigger thief - a Bald Eagle - showed up!#osprey #peregrinefalcon #raptors #nature#NaturePhotography#birds#Wildlife#naturecommunity#photography#birding#birdphotography

“Catastrophic”: Gaza Aid Worker on “Horror” of Forced Relocations Amid Israel’s War on Southern Strip"We go to Gaza for an update on Israel’s attack, which is now being described as one of the worst assaults on any civilian population in recent times. As Israeli tanks enter Khan Younis and the Palestinian death toll tops 16,000, we speak with Yousef Hammash. The advocacy officer for the Norwegian Refugee Council in Gaza describes how he and his family are facing internal displacement for the third time during the assault, this time from Khan Younis, where they had fled after Israeli warnings to head to the south of the Gaza Strip. Now in Rafah by the Egyptian border, they are struggling to find shelter and, like thousands of other now-homeless Palestinians, have resorted to living in a makeshift tent. “I left everything behind,” Hammash says about leaving his home in Gaza City, now destroyed. “I didn’t care what I was going to lose. I was looking for the safety of my family.” Hammash says a paltry amount of humanitarian aid is being allowed into Gaza even as refugees of the war face starvation, dehydration and infection. “The amount of aid that’s coming to Gaza is literally not tangible,” he says."https://www.democracynow.org/2023/12/6/gaza_update_yousef_hammash#Gaza #Palestine #Israel #Genocide

@alkeddie "... enraged at Israel..." But, the only solution guaranteeing equity and justice for Palestinians and ultimately Israeli Jews is the dissolution of the apartheid state of Israel and its replacement with a democratic, secular state. After 75 years of Israeli oppression and genocide, the difficulty in bringing this about would seem insurmountable. As Fanon would have it, it may be that the process of bringing about liberation might represent the negation of this contradiction. This was the path shown by South African liberation, despite the differences and despite the fact that even in South Africa, liberation was stunted and thwarted by the continued rule of capital.

Happy #blackbirdersweek ! Here are some salt-marsh denizens at the Marine Nature Study Area, seen yesterday, to start the week off right (1st of 3 sets). And since this year's Black Birders Week theme is sparrows, this series starts with a Salt-marsh Sparrow and ends with a Song Sparrow. To me, the Saltie is emblematic of the plight of salt marsh ecosystems, endangered as encroachment by developers, pollution and sea-level rise due to global heating steadily erode their habitat. Preservation of salt-marsh ecosystems also connects with struggles for climate and environmental justice, as exemplified by the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina and other climate disasters. We would all do well to reflect on the intimate links between environmental and social justice and ecological and social sustainability. Please see alt-text for specific info.#birds #birding #biodiversity #naturephotography #antiracism #environmentalism #environmentaljustice #climatejustice #climatechange

From an "Other 98%" post on fb:"Minneapolis isn’t “responding” to ICE anymore. Minneapolis is organizing to OUTLAST ICE. After weeks of escalated federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota, the Twin Cities are doing something the rest of the country keeps saying it wants but rarely builds: an everyday, neighborhood-level infrastructure that makes state violence harder to pull off in silence. Here’s what that infrastructure looks like on the ground: Signal chats that spread sightings in minutes, people walking around with whistles, neighbors showing up fast when someone’s being cornered, and ordinary folks choosing “I’m watching” as a civic identity. In a Jacobin interview, Minneapolis organizer Aru Shiney-Ajay describes a staggering density of participation, including neighborhood chats reaching “over 4 percent” of residents and rapid-response patrol chats that hit 1,000 people in a single neighborhood by late morning. That matters because ICE thrives on logistics and isolation. You cannot “community statement” your way out of a federal dragnet. You have to interrupt the machine where it eats and sleeps and hides. That’s why Minneapolis didn’t just stay defensive. It went on offense.Activists have targeted the “pillars” that let ICE operate like an occupying force: hotels, rental cars, corporate partners, the quiet, normal places where repression refuels. A local campaign that pushed a Hilton-branded hotel to refuse service to ICE, triggering national blowback and a corporate scramble. What makes this smart isn’t the spectacle. It’s the leverage. A regime can ignore outrage. It can’t ignore friction inside the supply chain that keeps its agents moving. Then came the proof-of-concept flex: the January 23 “ICE Out” general strike day in Minneapolis and beyond, called by unions and community groups as a refusal of business as usual under terror. This was a muscle-building exercise: can we coordinate, can we hold lines, can we protect each other, can we make the city ungovernable for people who think they can hunt humans here? This is what resistance looks like when it grows up. Not just rage. Routines. Not just protest. Infrastructure. And that’s the real exportable lesson: if you want ICE out of your city, don’t wait for permission from pundits or politicians. Build networks that make disappearance difficult, complicity expensive, and solidarity automatic."#abolishice #Minneapolis #maga #fascism #antifascism
