There is a mental health concept called ring theory. The basic idea is that the people closest to direct impact should not be expected to manage the pain of those a step removed. Think ripples in a pond. You reach in with comfort to the people closest to the crisis and reach out to people another step removed for your own comfort needs. There are lots of different crises right now, and the rings can overlap. So who is closest to the impact can vary by topic. Very useful mindset with pain.

@yogthos I completely accept that all these statements are true and that aid was necessary for liberation. But I don't think that makes Russia a "good guy." I think Russia invests in conflict for their own reasons. And Africans were the ones invested in using the assistance for something beneficial.

@yogthos Fair distinction. And one I do not know all the details about. At one point, Russia was in control of the USSR. And Russia in particular has a very long recent history of inciting conflict.Ukraine was part of the USSR too, right? Russia seems to be the one not honoring agreements and inciting fights for their own reasons.I feel like everyone was trying to establish their own cultural identity after the USSR disbanded, and Russia just wants to stay in charge.

@yogthos I don't think you want to have the discussion. You keep focusing on being dismissive of the information I don't know in depth. I don't know the history. I know the current events. And the behavior patterns we see now keep repeating. So yes, I expect they've been repeating for a damn long time. That's how behavior patterns work.

@zeldman I think this is the most maddening aspect of the current situation.Every step along the way there have been beyond legitimate reasons to disqualify him from public office and put him in prison instead. And no matter how deep and ugly his crimes, other politicians protected him from the consequences of his own horrifying behavior. He should have never been allowed in politics in the first damn place.

@stux Not only is Trump's logic flawed, he's also not being "good." Acting like wearing any religious label makes him a decent human being....So I'm not sure what good "belief" ever did him.Though, I'm pretty sure that's just more lip service to his base, and not something he even cares about. Dude says a lot of words that aren't grounded in reality. He'll sell a Bible, but he certainly doesn't read it or understand it.

@Nonilex So....Russia and China criticized the illegal invasion of Venezuela while the UN rolled over for it?So deep in the hypocrisy that only abusers are naming the problem.Satire is dead.
