@sethcotlar @DanielEsq The reason you don’t see anything inappropriate is likely due in large part to your instance admin. My admin has a long list of instances we are defederated from for Nazi/hate and/or pedo material so there certainly is bad stuff out there. The rules are entirely up to admins, so it’s important to find the instance that works for you.

@lauren @tivasyk I think we’re talking about two different issues here. You’re talking about whether people, politicians, etc should be willing to speak with the press. Most of us are talking about what most media chooses to publicize and emphasize and why that pisses us off. I don’t think the press focuses on Republican talking points because only Republicans talk to the press. It’s a choice.

@lauren @tivasyk I’m sorry, we’re going to have to disagree entirely. I refuse to believe that only Republicans are willing to talk to reporters. And I definitely disagree that it is the media’s job to be a mouthpiece for whoever will speak to them. I mean, they certainly can and do, but I’m not going to respect them for spreading misinformation. So much for the esteemed Fourth Estate holding the powerful accountable.

@lauren @tivasyk I’m glad you’re doing that. But talk radio isn’t conservative because only conservatives come on the shows. It’s because the hosts and the listeners (and likely the station owners) are conservative. And they choose to push simplistic, hot button, conservative ideas. They have no interest in context or truth. They want drama for dollars. I’m not going to respect them.

@lauren @tivasyk Wait a minute. You start out with telling us not to complain about media because the problem is that liberals don’t talk to the press. You’re telling me that I’m the one that’s being too broad? I’m going to say this once more: Media can do as it pleases, and it does. I can be critical of it, and I very much am. Thank you for your efforts, because it’s going to take a lot to pull us out of the hole we’re in.

@mtomczak @bezoar @tivasyk @lauren If this is truly what reporting is now, then we are doomed. This is the opposite of what we should aspire to. This is Russia level nihilism where truth is meaningless and all that matters is who has the megaphone.

@lauren @mtomczak @bezoar @tivasyk I’m old enough to remember when journalists published lies, they lost their jobs for it. Some still believe in journalistic standards necessary for democracy to thrive, such as @froomkin, @markjacob, and @jayrosen_nyu. Check them out. You’ve convinced me that journalistic criticism is essential to help those searching for reliable sources.

@bezoar @mtomczak @tivasyk @lauren And how does a consumer, who doesn’t know any more than a reporter, know what information to believe? If there is no expectation of accountability, no criticism?

@lauren @bezoar @mtomczak @tivasyk Looking at media critically is how consumers choose. Telling people not to be critical of media is impossible and quite ridiculous, and in direct opposition to the critical thinking skills they attempt to teach in choosing sources at school. It’s the only hope we have against disinformation. I can not believe we even have to have this discussion. What truly depressing times we live in.

@lauren @bezoar @mtomczak @tivasyk Then I guess you’re wasting your time going on talk radio, because misinformation is already out there and people have already picked their sides and believe what they want to believe. I will continue to be critical of the media and search for reliable sources, and I’m grateful to those who share that information with me. Truth matters, otherwise we fall. We can already see proof of that.

@lauren You’re missing my point, which is: what you are doing matters because (I assume) you are trying to open people’s eyes to the truth. Truth still matters to people, and they are looking for it (maybe in the wrong places!) If there is no belief in truth, they disengage. It becomes about survival, not a functional society. That is why the GOP is trying to eliminate the concept of truth. That is why having high quality, pro democracy journalism matters.
