One problem I've noticed with how people are embracing Mastodon.Almost all of the instances are the same.I've yet to see one instance that does something different. The only differences between most of them is how they're being hosted and who's doing the hosting.

There's nothing stopping anyone from coding YouTube integration into their instance, or displaying oEmbed content from links. You could make a setup that only allows users to sign-in with their Steam accounts and have their Steam username be their name on your server.

Damn near everyone just rolled the same Mastodon build and called it a day.Barely anyone even looked at other ActivityPub server setups like Friendica or Pleroma.

And one thing I keep seeing said on Twitter and Mastodon is "It'll be big once there's a commercial instance".Honestly that's just waiting for Twitter to happen again and defeats the point of all of this.Really what people should be looking forward to are services.

Mastodon doesn't need it's Twitter or Facebook IMO, it needs it's Google and Bing. It's federated, decentralized in the traditional sense.A non-essential product that feels central is the thing that'll corral the fediverse into some standards on experience.

I see a lot of people talking about how SSB or Mastodon can deliver "global" communication the way Twitter does and I haven't seen anyone suggest "build a search engine" yet.

It's like with Google. You can ignore Google, Google isn't necessary for a website. But most people don't ignore Google. If Mastodon gets its Google you'll see the most of the network change.

A lot of the "decentralized" HTTP web is just people building centralized services that everyone just takes for granted and thinks of as essential.Like blogs and Gravatar.Mastodon could use a few of those.

@jonoabroad @simon @blaine @bmann I think this is why Google, Microsoft and Apple started pushing Passkeys.

@mauve too reliant on the DHT IMO, I feel Hyperdrive and IPNS do the job better since they support offline local use cases. Also you're reminding me of the days of BitTorrent Maelstrom and BitTorrent Sync.

@orowith2os @thomasfuchs @jesseplusplus @jonty The server-side code that handles this feature is open source (client code wouldn't be necessary here).https://github.com/bluesky-social/indigoAlso "much of the existing web uses" isn't much of a reason IMO.Mastodon isn't very good at migrations for example, and signed posts is seemingly broken on Mastodon right now.And then there's the quotes issue...

@aral In the allegory of The Matrix I don't think the machines are 100% meant to only reflect machines. The message (where there is one) isn't "Your computer is going to be a fascist" it's "Your computer is going to aid a fascist".But mostly I think they just wanted to make a cool movie and worked their way backwards from there into an allegory for bonus points.
