This is weird and amazing. Some of the culture jamming stuff is either far outside my expertise, or just silly. I can’t tell which.I expect @andybaio and @GreatDismal would get it all, though. One of the Most Audacious Pranks in History Was Hidden in a Hit TV Show for Years. Not Everyone Found It Funny. https://slate.com/culture/2023/12/melrose-place-abortion-art-gala-committee-mel-chin.html

@clive I basically only ever drink it while driving, so I’d say: a quick way to get weirdly flavored caffeine in a small can, and it’s nearly always available (but even worse tasting) sugar-free.On long road trips I bounce between (much preferred) unsweetened iced tea, diet mtn dew (high school memories), and Red Bull. The latter is the *only* drink consistently available in a non-plastic container, is not a huge volume, and is reasonably tolerable.Otherwise it’s plastic bottles all day 😣

@clive exactly. And that’s especially true in, say, Oklahoma or North Dakota. That’s like 90% of why I buy Red Bull, and there’s no other consistent replacement. If it’s around, I will often buy Starbucks double shot espresso cans. But most have been replaced with like a 16oz can with a ton of sugar. That would kill me. I just need a bit of a caffeine kick, not a mule kick

@shacker @giosci thanks!I have basically the same process, and it’s almost entirely why I use Lightroom instead of Apple Photos: there’s no pick/reject workflow there.I did not know about the two-up feature, though, that will help a lot.And you are clearly shooting raw if you have 13,500 photos taking up 500gbb of space. :) I barely ever edit, and love the Fuji looks, so am almost exclusively jpg. I hope someday to spend enough time on it that editing might matter to me.

The second half of this episode (a reprise of a 2014 episode, I believe) is a perfect attack on the effective altruists:It makes no sense to spend money today to save theoretical future people, when it could instead be spent to help people alive right now, and make it more likely there will *be* people tomorrow.580- Mr Yuk — 99% Invisible https://overcast.fm/+yIOzDGtz0

@ivory I regularly get image previews, but when I click on the image I get a blank screen. Is there any way to force the image to download?

@theropologist @clive if you love beowolf, I can’t recommend enough that you read The Mere Wife, especially if you are American. A modern retelling, and so good.

@clive glad you’re writing about this. But please, when you write about those concerns, clarify whether people are actually injured regularly, and clarify how many people have those concerns vs have those same concerns about, say, cars, which kill 40k Americans a year. So many articles about bikes just write about bikes, which becomes a platform for people’s irrational fears, with no space for pointing out how safe bikes are for the people around them vs the alternatives

@clive a bit like all the articles of my youth that talked about pot and alcohol, without bothering to mention that alcohol kills tens of thousands of Americans a year and pot kills roughly zero. Like, people’s fears should get kinda swamped by that reality

@debcha some people think every day about the Roman Empire. I think every day about what percent of Canadians live below the border between North Dakota and Canada.

@LordWoolamaloo yours is extinct? Ours is still active. (Although the park is not royal.)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Tabor,_Portland,_OregonI enjoyed the ride up Arthur’s Seat more, though, because it feels more like a getaway from the city than a part of it.We have much bigger active volcanoes nearby, but not quite in the city. Mt St Helen’s is visible on a clear day.

@historyofpunkrock this song has always confused me. People call them punk, their name sounds punk, but… this song absolutely does not. And since it’s the only song of theirs I really know,I just am confused.A bit like the Cramps, where I’m like, this band is obviously all about desiccated corpses and horror, and, ah, no, it’s just glam rockabilly. Make it make sense!
