This is like everyone simultaneously wandering around the cafeteria holding their trays looking for their friends.

Someone taught me this little trick ages ago and it makes me happy every time I remember to do it:When kicking off a long-running job from the command line on a Mac, append `; say "I'm done"` to the end.You can safely cmd-tab away from your job and the computer will remind you to check back when it's complete rather than forgetting about it for hours like I normally do.

An Advent of Code where every day you have to go back a year in web development until on the 25th day you're just writing all-caps HTML and Java applets.

@clive I've actually gotten good at giving myself permission to play game that do this to me, as long as I uninstall them the moment I hit diminishing returns. For me it's either resource-management games or roguelikes. I can tell when playing has become habitual and is actually no longer fun and then the minute I think about it like that, I delete it, treating it as if I "finished" it. At least for me this works and leaves the whole experience a net positive.

I’m good at both kinds of programming: overcomplicating simple things and underestimating complex problems

In 8th grade I bought a cassette tape on a whim because the album had a bad word in the title and then showed it off to my friend while still in the store. A Sam Goody employee approached us to accuse us of shoplifting a Sugarcubes record, and I got to show him the receipt and say, “No, see, I paid for this, and it’s called ‘Songs about Fucking.’”I’ve always been grateful to Steve Albini for this formative Gen X moment.
