Er, 2015? I meant 2005.Young people, when you're not sure what decade it is, is a sign you're getting old.

For my CI system, I went for "controller", "manager", and "worker" as the terminogy, instead of "master" and "slave". I don't know if mine are excellent choices either, feedback welcome.

i'm white and male, but I prefer to avoid terminology and naming that makes other people uncomfortable. Frankly, master/slave makes me uncomfortable, especially so in software that provides software freedom. It seems wrong to use anti-freedom terminology for such software. But not only in that context. There's no need to use terminology about humans being owned or considered property in any context.

How much training should air plane passenger get for getting on and off board, packing luggage, and evacuating in emergencies?

If I wear sandals on my bare feet, the sandals tend to remove skin from my feet. If I wear socks with sandals, people tell me I'm unfashionable. So I don't usually wear sandals, but when I do, I do it with the utter conviction that being unfashionable has never hurt me.

High cohesion, low coupling. These concepts have served me well when designing software since I learnt about them in the mid-80s.These days software development seems to all be about not making programmers think and sacrificing quality for pushing things out faster. Not everything is worse. There's a lot more effort on, say, unit testing now. But I allow myself to be grumpy and yell at the cloud occasionally. I hope it amuses people.#iamaclown

Cryptography absolutism is when you say it's not worth using cryptography at all, unless you're protected against every conceivable scenario.I find i's a somewhat common ailment among cryptography enthusiasts.

@cstanhope Absolutism in privacy is also common. It feels a little like the world has gone from having wonderful gradients in all the possible colours to being starkly black and white. One is either completely for a thing, or completely against it. No compromise is possible. This happens in most areas of life, I think. Politics is the most clear example, of course, but computer security, privacy, cryptography, and preference in programming language all suffer from it.

@cstanhope I almost want to declare that everyone needs to be moderate in all things, or there's no point in even trying anything, ever. Death to all fanatics!

It bothers me a little every time someone calls me a software engineer. I'm not an engineer. What I do is not sufficiently based on actual science, research, and solid, tested formal models to be called engineering."Software developer" and "hacker" and "klutz" are all accurate.

@brennen I've seen trained electricians install electrical things in ways that would make me ashamed if I did them. Installations involving duct tape and literal chewing gum.The training is there so they know when a kludge is safe and acceptable, I guess.

When you have to take a break from a coding project for a few weeks, it's really, really helpful to have written good commit messages, what you intended to do next, what your end goal is, and to have a test suite you trust.

Anyone have statistics for how common use of version control is in the software development industry these days?

I remember seeing an article saying "20% of companies use version control" in the past year, but I don't have a link to that.

(Not that you like the toot, or favouriting a toot about a sad thing happening to me would make you a jerk.)Respond if you want to have a conversation about the toot.

Redis developer and others complain that being a maintainer of a successful open source project is hard work. While I'm sure there are problems, it sounds a little like rich people complaining that they have a hard life.A side plot is that apparently Linux distributions and users make changes and this is awaful for the maintainers. This I can't understand at all.I would go as far as saying that if software is only ever modified by its own developers, it's not free software.

I'm moving again, to a new mastodon instance. This time to a personal one, hosted by masto.host.https://toot.liw.fi/@liw if you want to follow me there as well. (I've set up this one to tell people, but might as well toot about it, too.)Thanks to @Dereckson for social.nasqueron.org, been happy, but I wanted to explore having my own instance next.
