@Bam Excellent thread. It is shocking but not surprising that they would teach Merchant of Venice without explaining the history of Jews in England/Europe and somehow take the “hath a Jew not eyes” speech as absolving him of antisemitism.I love Shakespeare, I can’t help it, and I am fascinated by how my favorite Shakespeare scholars are also Jewish. I tell myself that if he were of this time he would not be an antisemite. Of course I know this is pure fantasy. But the sad thing is that loving Shakespeare is also a constant recognition of how antisemitism is baked into modern culture, European history, and Christianity. It is inescapable. To pretend otherwise, and to teach students Shakespeare without confronting the antisemitism, is to be complicit in it. (Sorry for my long reply)

Anyone have any insight into why this church has what looks like a Magen David with fire in it, suspended over a sea of flames, on their stained glass window?Apologies for the poor quality photo. I could be seeing things wrong. I’m sharing this because it is some of the most vile Mein Kampf level #Antisemitism I have seen on Mastodon. Isn’t this place supposed to be better than that?It is astounding to me how people who espouse Nazi beliefs can actually consider themselves anti-Nazi.This is indistinguishable from Hitler’s (yimakh shemo) perspective.
