@futurebird Kitchens in Spain are typically rather 'dated', mismatched, brightly coloured and with things sat around, not hidden. Shelves rather than cupboards. Overtly about activity rather than style. A totally different easthetic than island, fitted, recessed.A standard theme in Almódovar.

@futurebird I lean towards minimal water use (no tub) and instantaneous hot water rather than hot tanks. Also, since very little time overall is spent in a bathroom, that it should be small and the space allocated instead to 'lived in' areas.

@futurebird Real linoloeum would be even more expensive than wood these days. A wonderful natural product with a glorious smell.

@futurebird There is a thing called Edinburgh rock which is somewhat translucent, very brittle and flaky. Closely resembling mica. It is vile.

@futurebird @catmisgivings @glasspusher On the other end of the scale, I remember fondly some clear rose coloured boiled sweets of perfect, almost rubbery texture and tongue-shaped depression. They had an intense cherry flavour. Delicious.Unfortunately, these were a vehicle for getting penicillin into children, in an era when that drug was way more effective than it is now.A too successful strategy.

@futurebird Concentrating is often too intense and self-defeating. Stepping away can bring a useful insight. I prefer to creep up on a problem, rather than hammering away at it. Relaxed mode is more powerful.

@futurebird @catmisgivings @AnachronistJohn Excellent. There were odd words before that were Norse but it started to crystallise for me at 900. @yvanspijk

@futurebird If someone is wearing Nazi regalia, criticising that is not weighing in on fashion choices. That is the way I see it.

@futurebird I watch YouTube from a couple of steps removed. There are gems there and to eschew it entirely would be like vowing never to step into a library ever again. Adam Harrison on Pennsylvania forests would be a painful loss.

@futurebird It is reviewed in the Guardian today. The shower scenes are very tastefully done, apparently.

@ChrisMayLA6 On the accession of Eastern Europe, Blair had the option of a seven year phase-in but refused it.To "borders should not exist" purists, this is not problematic. It did though mean that flows exceeded what the logistics could handle - infrastructure and employment. Much grievance was not about xenophobia but about the sudden deterioration of schools, GP surgeries, housing availability. There should have been a seven year transition and there should have been comprehensive social integration and infrastructure projects in parallel. We are essentially still in that place. There are academic economic arguments about demographics and entrepreneurial spirit which look good on a spreadsheet but still no attempt at planning, no transition arrangements.Race and volume get all the attention on both sides of the divide but the assumption is still that new arrivals will just disappear into the system, which will take up the slack, with no policy and no investment.

@Heliograph @futurebird That is quite right as I understand it. Though not sure about the role of formic acid. The benefit to the ants is their predation on the parasites? You will think me quite mad but I visited my doctor some years ago about what seemed to be quite severe arthritis in my knee. I was wearing a knee support and it affected my walking.I visited some wood ants and knelt down to take some photos of them dismembering a dead wasp. Three or four of them stung me. Two stings near my knee. Within a day, my arthritis symptoms had gone.
