@Pepsi I wish I could like Pintrest more than I do. There are some really phenomenal collections on there. I've lost so much time browsing through people's Pulp Sci Fi boards and whatnot. But oh em gee it's so godsdamned time consuming to save those bing-bang images.

This one is too long for Mastadon, but important for anyone who runs a WordPress I think. TL;DR: A highly rated backup plugin available through wordpress' official site is holding my backup hostage for $70, without ever informing me of this possibility. https://plus.google.com/100807759232603150118/posts/K7zjxp4N7n2

@June @carbontwelve @aparrish My first reaction to reading this was "Absolutely! Though my instance doesn't accept donations." Then I got curious. Then I did some digging. Turns out my instance DOES accept donations, I just never realized it. Thank you for reminding me to live up to my beliefs.

Does THIS scan? Each must make a saving throw versus Magic or be transformed into some humiliating creature. (Roll: 1. Rabbit, 2. Cockroach, 3. Sheep, 4. Mule, 5. Toad, 6. Newt.) Those who make their save are still transformed, but only partially. After determining an animal for these characters roll another d6. If the result is 1-3, the character acquires that many animal features. If the result is 4-6, they transform into an animal, but retain a number of human features equal to the die roll minus 3. The referee determines what abilities and limitations these transformations imply.

*windows points to software cracker* THIS IS A VIRUS. Me: Now windows, are you sure you're not just desperate to defend capitalist hegemony over the tools that are necessary for modern work? Windows: DON'T WORRY I DELETED IT FOR YOU.

@fitheach I am pretty ignorant about EU politics, and legit thought this was going to lead into some alternate universe story about a walrus version of Donald Trump.

So there's this absolute scumbag in North Carolina who hates gay people, and also happens to be blind. In the last few days I've seen a ton of people mock him for not looking at cameras, or 'the weird way he moves his eyes.' It's a textbook example of why focusing criticism on someone's physical traits is never a good idea. Most folks I've pointed this out to are suitably chagrined, and I appreciate them <3. A few try to defend themselves. He's a scumbag, so there's no holes barred on insulting him, right? No. When we mock a bad person for being blind, or fat, or trans, we're telling everyone with those traits that we secretly think they're less than wholly human. Maybe we won't admit it so long they remain "good," but we've admitted that it's there under the surface.

@hollyamory As it happens, my day job is actually as a school photographer. I'm always grateful for the good humor of blind kids as they cope with my clumsy attempts to pose them. Looking at the camera is overrated anyway. Looking genuinely happy is the trick to a good portrait.

From the Archives: "Checking for Traps in Bullshit"http://www.paperspencils.com/checking-for-traps-is-bullshit/I wound up sticking with that stopgap solution for the past 7 years, and never regretted it. Has resulted in much more interesting play.

Crowdsource with me, comrades. I'm putting together a list of work that needs to get done, but isn't getting done under capitalism. Specifically I want to point to things people can see directly in their day to day lives and in their communities: pot holes, trash in the streets, etc. What can you come up with?

@xj9 I like that idea =DBut at the moment I'm just trying to write a short list of easy-to-follow examples of how "jobs that need to be done" and "jobs you can get paid for" don't match up.

It occurs to me that some of you young folk have always lived in this world of bountiful memes. New memes every day, big memes, small memes, niche memes, memes that make their way to the heart of the zeitgeist. It wasn't always like that. In my day we had only one meme. We made that meme into an anthem. A flag. An identity. All our base belonged to it.

I find myself in the position of talking to Wil Wheaton fans. Can someone give me the tea on the whole "Wil Wheaton is a Transphobe" thing? I don't know anything about the origin of those accusations, and I'll need some receipts if I'm going to wade into this.
