God can only be love because God's Being is always for us, not for God. God uniquely does not need to be, because of God's superiority to Being. we creatures are because we must be for there to be an us; for us Being is a necessity. it is not at all necessary for God: God does not need to be, Being is not God's natural state. yet God's Being provides us with an experience which we desperately need, of a perfection within Being which is greater than Being. this Being-of-God cannot be other than love, because it is an emptying-out-of-self and a coming-into-us for our sake, and that act is intrinsically one of love

what i like about the Gospel of John is precisely that it's not a comprehensive systematic theology. by virtue of ending with:"But there are also many other things that Jesus did; if every one of them were written down, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written."it doesn't seek to totalize, it doesn't seek to comprehend, it doesn't seek to envelop everything. it simply says what it is called to profess and then falls silent—and i think that is what we need to be content with. not to grasp everything, which we cannot ever do. but to say that which we in particular need to say and can attest to, and then to keep our hearts open

the important thing about God is that i can explain God's actions—they're all love—yet they never cease to surprise me. every time i encounter God the encounter is somehow not what i would expect, even as i know that each encounter shares precisely the same raison d'être. likewise God instills a response in me which i can explain—i do it for love's sake—but which surprises me. after all, it baffles me that it is possible to act for God in the first place, since God lacks nothing which i can provide.
