Smith's works are relatively few, but all are memorable for many reasons, including their unusual story structure set within the same conceptual universe. A fascinating series of stories penned by an author with a fascinating history.

@lauren Indirectly relevant: I once had to attend a family event but had absolutely no voice, which would be a problem. So I played around with my reading software and chose a high-quality artificial voice that sounded remarkably close to my own (intonations, pitch, etc) then just typed my contributions and had the software read it.Everyone claimed they couldn't understand a word. 🙄In frustration I chose a more machine-type voice and presto! Clarity. 🙄🙄🙄

@lauren I can understand the amusement! 😀Back when I used to do tech writing, my favourite project ended up being the one where the engineers put a prototype on my desk, a bunch of inscruitable engineering notes that might contribute towards making an intelligible user manual for non-high-school-grads with English as an additional language, and literally sitting there pushing buttons and seeing what went 'bing!' 😂

@grammargirl I was loaned out to a small oil and gas tech firm to write a user manual for a new product. All I had were notes scrawled by electrical engineers and a protype I could push buttons on to see what happened. 😂The engineers knew I was unfamiliar with their field but I impressed them with good questions nonetheless: usually, this was simply me identifying that they failed to use any verbs that might hint what Part A was doing with Part B. Deciphering grammar FTW! 😀

@grammargirl Oh, that would be terrible! I'm sorry. ☹️Clarifications are SO critical! Indeed, though it amused me to just push buttons and see what happened, engineers observing me doing that flagged a big design problem: I was leaning my hand against a critical (delicate) component to reach a keypad. It never occured to the designers that users might do this because it was obvious to them that this should NOT be done. But, definitely not obvious to the rest of us! 😬

@hackaday If you do this, make sure you add a ton of thermal insulation around the flux capacitor, otherwise the flux capacitor heats up, melts the foam, and you're stuck with locally-sourced horsehair and mud to rebuild … if you're lucky.#TimeTravelProblems
