Ok - in the #FOSS spirit of 'release early and often', without further ado, here's my first draft of (what I hope is) a comprehensive tutorial (copy&paste) for building your own production-ready #Mastodon 4 instance: https://tech.oeru.org/join-fediverse-installing-production-mastodon-40-ubuntu-2204-docker-compose It's likely to be getting lots of tweaks and nudges over the coming few days. Feel free to leave comments with suggestions/corrections!#selfhosting #fediverse #sysadmin #tutorial #howto

And having started that ball rolling... I need to start upgrading my Mastodon instances to 4.0.1! https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases

@strypey I have a lot of recipes I can give you (mastodon, write.freely, lemmy, pixelfed, peertube, owncast, mobilizon), some already published on https://tech.oeru.org, if it's of interest. We should compare notes...

@strypey yup, it's fairly typical of RNZ's pundits (an occasional exception is @billbennett) that they gush over foreign mega tech corporate shenanigans/intrigue/ineptitude and give short shrift/faint praise to community-developed tech... It's disappointing.

@webmink it's just too bad they didn't the language quite right (commercial vs. proprietary). We need policy makers who get this stuff. Wonder if we'll ever see a flood of #FOSS devs stepping up into political roles. I suspect the set of FOSS devs/advocates who would willingly enter the political fray is vanishingly small.

@webmink the appropriate response is to remind Zoom (and any other proprietary software vendor) that their software isn't essential. That's done by *no longer using it*. The #LibreSoftware options are many and extremely compelling. Organisations for whom that transition is painful should... pause for a moment and ask themselves how they allowed themselves to fall into that very bad situation. Nearly every organisation is dependent on proprietary software, i.e. hostage: https://davelane.nz/mshostage

@apereo Yup. It's a no-brainer. IF anyone wants assistance setting up their own BigBlueButton, the OER Foundation can help. And we can offer instances for people to test if they're not convinced it's the way forward. @conservancy

I've just written this: https://tech.oeru.org/foss-libresoftware-its-about-clarity-and-values to explain why I've adopted the term #LibreSoftware over #FOSS or #OpenSource to talk about the *non-proprietary* software about which I'm passionate.

@cogdog in my days of providing IT support for people unlucky enough to be using MS products, I was frequently asked to help save corrupted MS Office files. MSO is surprisingly fragile. LibreOffice's code for opening Microsoft's proprietary formats is demonstrably better than MS'. Many 'irretrievable' MS files've been saved by LO despite MS trying to hobble it for most of its existence (because it's excellent). Users should take note. Incidentally LO came from StarOffice which is as old as MSO.

@rfheller this is interesting - wondering if you're aware of the (now decade-old & proven) programme I describe here: https://davelane.nz/openschools - it's about primary/secondary schools but I think the model could easily be expanded to tertiary. Note, my post includes a full downloadable (CC-licensed) PDF book on this case study.
