It’s important to pay attention to the framing here, yes there’s the optimistic potential (“Can Make”), but the fact that a potential benefit exists doesn’t mean that benefit will really be realized (and as the article makes clear AI guzzles water).https://t.co/q50dFvBcwr

Anytime that someone writes a post on social media that points to some past occurrence and says “nobody really knows why,” a group of historians who know why (and have published books/articles explaining exactly why) scream.

There are a lot of people who spent years saying he isn’t a superhero, and a lot of those people were mocked as technophobic Luddites by many of the same people who have recently become critical of him. This is a good review, but the above point stands.https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/09/18/elon-musk-walter-isaacson-book-review

The other day I was arguing with a colleague, & I said that I thought 95% of the funds getting thrown at AI would be better spent strengthening infrastructure to handle climate change. He said “AI will fix climate change.”Now I think 100% of those funds should be redirected.

Heartbroken by this news. David was a friend, a mentor, and I know that without his support I wouldn’t be where I am today. He was a daring and prescient critic willing to call out tech BS when doing so was quite unpopular. He will be missed. May his memory be for a blessing.

When trying to make sense of tech company shenanigans it can be useful to see their leaders not as brilliant nefarious Bond villains but as business people who don’t really know what they’re doing but whose every random pronouncement (due to their wealth) gets taken seriously.

A vaguely conspiratorial sounding belief that I nevertheless really believe is that much of the current hyperbolic hubbub about AI causing humanity’s extinction is meant to deliberately distract us from the extinctions humanity is causing…https://t.co/ewgvu11faJ

“To begin with, I am less than persuaded that the democratizing effects of computers outweigh their tendency to centralize and concentrate power,” - David Golumbia.David was a hell of a critic, a generous mentor, and a true friend. I will miss him:https://librarianshipwreck.wordpress.com/2023/09/18/in-memory-of-david-golumbia/

When seeing posts by AI advocates a fun game to play is to take whatever they’ve said and replace “AI” with “the messiah” or with “God.”In many cases it quickly makes clear that they aren’t really talking about technology, they’re giving voice to a religious belief.

Whoever said “the Internet never forgets” clearly doesn’t work with (or on preserving born) digital material. The Internet “forgets” a lot of stuff, and in many cases those in control of certain platforms enact policies that lead to a lot of “forgetting.”

Amidst all the attention to the verdict at SBF’s trial and WeWork’s bankruptcy it’s worth remembering how for a long time expressing any skepticism about either (SBF or WeWork) got you lambasted as a technophobic Luddite.

I know it’s fun to say “we were promised flying cars and instead we got [bad thing],” but I feel like it’s more accurate to say “we were warned that we were building powerful control and surveillance systems that would eat the planet and that’s exactly what we got.”

Not going to lie, often when I see someone I like and respect using AI generated art I wind up liking and respecting them a bit less.

The focus on hyperbolic/apocalyptic “what if’s” around robots and AI consistently distracts us from the harms and dangers already being perpetrated by these technologies. This isn’t a story about Terminator, this is a story about industrial safety…https://www.thedailybeast.com/tesla-robot-attacked-engineer-with-its-claws-report-says
