@mjg59 i would be remiss amid the quality replies that already exist to neglect pointing out zfs raw send and how it can back up data sets encrypted with different keys than the source, in a way that the target can't see into them

source svg file (text is text here rather than paths, but won't render right if you don't have Source Sans 3 and Source Code Pro; this is the only format plausible to be remotely screen reader compatible): https://jade.fyi/nix-iceberg-src.svgthis was a collaborative project with puck, @Qyriad, and wiggles

the latest @notjustbikes video exactly matches my experience going to Montreal: at every corner you run into an absolute atrocity of urban planning: from 40 second fixed timers on traffic signals to highways at random street corners, from the bus ticketing that doesn't allow interrupting trips to the buses that get stuck in traffic, bro what the fuck is this placeI live in Vancouver, and the bike infrastructure here is a trashfire, the intercity rail is bested by a bus and still wtf is this.

at least the buses in Vancouver actually get you places approximately on time. i couldn't believe the number of stop signs the Montreal ones would hit.i got into the city and yes the bus to the city from the airport is clown shoes but it's worse: there's *weird* ticket machines for it, *and* it is every 30 minutes.they can be building all their fancy rail projects but until the city stops being railed by highways i don't really want to go there again.

oh, and erm. the place i was at prior to being in Montreal was literally Amsterdam so that certainly coloured my opinions. but also what the hell. this is among the most terrible places I've been and I've been to about 10 different countries.

Mastodon #psa: there's a post going around about #mozilla #firefox and the salary of the Mozilla Corporation CEO. This post is based on a blog post written by an openly transphobic fascist, Brian Lunduke, who has a beef with Mozilla for them treating trans employees like human beings. It doesn't matter how true the material is; we must not take decisions based on information collated with such motives. This is a moderation issue and it should be taken down but it's already been seen a lot.

I really really don't want to link to receipts because they are vile and he doesn't deserve your energy. He has a second much more vile website on a different subdomain where you can find plenty of mask off fascism.

oh yeah the secret project I've been working on for two months, @lix_project, is finally in public preview. there's a fair number of rough edges in the website and infra remaining to fix but the software is rock solid.thanks so much to the dozens of people who have been running `main` daily for several weeks and reporting the few remaining issues. at this point i would say it's just a stabler, faster, more user friendly #Nix 2.18.if you want to try it out: https://lix.systems

this is a deliberately conservative release cycle in which we have largely frozen the core of the system and made core changes with extreme care, while being much more aggressive about UX improvements. the next few releases will very slowly relax this freeze as we start paying down technical debt and get things into a more maintainable shape.one of our primary goals is stability and responsible long term evolution of what we have, rather than cutting edge research.

@p1ng the difference to aux is that we have more resources (and more focused scope) and we have had everyone one would need from the nix community to be able to build a serious fork involved in ours for a period of months, so we've had a huge head start. we do want to work with them though!we are serious about both all creatures being welcome and also *actual usable software*. we've been working on error messages, making bugs fail harder, ux, and more. see the post down-thread for examples.

Wrote a post on how to do reasonable pinning for non-flake configs using a simple shell script, npins, and nixos-rebuild. I also talk about how tools like nixos-rebuild and nix-channel are skeletons in our closet that we need to actually replace and deprecate as a community, to bring people up to modern practices.https://jade.fyi/blog/pinning-nixos-with-npins/#nix #nixos

"jade why do you have such a vendetta against channels"channels kill 50% of the benefits of nixos by making configs unreproducible and are additionally inscrutible. you can't just look at a file in your git repo to find out *exactly* what stuff is running, and *also* know that nothing else is running.it's confusing that you can update your running nixpkgs independently of your system's build nixpkgs without doing it on purpose. tying these together is a huge UX improvement.

you see, the Nix community is very diverse: there's both white men who hate you for being a woman *and* white men who hate you for thinking that Nazis are bad

@mothcompute @confusion @sterophonick i mean the most "fit for purpose" thing here is a cgroup-scoped bpf lsm. or maybe landlock.the only problem with this idea is it is a "container"
