@grammargirl I didn't know this. I can now get a few, and not worry about using them in time. Thanks for this nugget of wisdom.

@arstechnica IoT is a reason to avoid stuff in my book. Your device has an app? I'm not buying it. Because sure as s**t, it'll have security holes, and there will be no security updates for it, even within a year of buying it. These things should have mandatory 10 year security updates. Most IoT ends up spying on you anyway, collecting data on your use of whatever it is. Make the data collection local, and only LAN accessible, no internet, and I might me interested.

@dhfir @LunaDragofelis @aheisleycook You can buy a windows licence, and download and install it. I personally wouldn't recommend windows now though. The computer isn't yours anymore with windows.https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11/

@dhfir @LunaDragofelis @aheisleycook I couldn't agree more. Nowadays I recommend Linux Mint, if you are new to linux, but used to windows. I use it as my daily driver OS on my PC.

@dhfir @LunaDragofelis @aheisleycook Yeah, I haven't ventured into arch territory yet, I'm still not experienced enough on Linux. And I've heard arch can be fiddly to set up. I might try manjaro at some point, but I always seem to gravitate back to mint. it really is a well looked after distro.

@dhfir @LunaDragofelis @aheisleycook Have you seen Vanilla OS? I watched a vid on Explaining Computers YouTube channel the other day. It looked pretty good, and secure to boot.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CHQ8c7QqlbM

@raineer @socketwench It doesn't need corporate investment to scale. It just needs more interested peeps to open new servers. And that's the beauty of it. There can be more servers, without huge amounts of investment. Corporates only want to invest so they can try to control it. We should refuse that at every turn.

@buster Aye, it's actually shocking how little they care for their own citizens. And some of the disasters like you say, they just hide the numbers. I remember the one with the flooded tunnel, and they seriously underestimated that. And that other time where they intentionally flooded villages at night by opening a dam without warning. It's barbaric. But yeah, there coverage is top notch, and balanced. They have friends there they care about, so I think they speak up, cos their friends can't.
