When we found out that deodorants were destroying the ozone layer, did we stay telling people to use less toilet spray and buy less Axe? No, we legislated big corps and the problem was completely solved after a few years. What's with the cult of personal responsibility, why are we still here telling people that if they don't take the plane and use paper straws maybe grandma won't lose her house to the rising tides before she dies in an 'unprecedented' heatwave?

Some thoughtful responses and some less. Thank you all for at least thinking about what's going on here.

Wow, Duolingo fired their translators to replace them by AI generated content. I thought they cared about language and communication! A lot of their courses are irreplaceable, the languages are not available in any other app and some real native people have made content for some of the endangered languages.

The funny thing is, if they truly believe this is a perfect fit for AI, it follows that duolingo believes it itself is obsolete: why would your users learn any language when they can instead use automated translation?

@ZachWeinersmith In my experience, Chinese calligraphy *is* highly controlled, with just as many rules as Latin calligraphy

@ZachWeinersmith No matter how transformative, none of it will benefit the poor in a capitalist society. So: Automation steals what jobs were left to vulnerable people, leading to a belated revolution against resource hogging moguls who own said automation. Capitalism dies, leading to societies where UBI and a cap on inequalities.

@ZachWeinersmith I think that argument has a PR function more than anything else. It never comes up in academic discussions (in my experience) because it obviously makes no sense, but I see academics use it when talking with non-academics. Because many people are swayed by equally simple and nonsensical arguments like "it makes sensible sentences, it must be alive" ....

@ZachWeinersmith Respectfully, it looks like you just haven't had many sorts of fruits lolI wouldn't be so judgemental of someone else, but I don't see you as a boring person, so let me recommend this channel:https://youtube.com/@weirdexplorer?si=QhEY8H-DtvfaELHQ

@futurebird I live in Japan and sometimes collaborate with artisans - kimono makers, silk producers, tea ceremony masters, lacquer masters. All are on the verge of collapse... some going bankrupt while we're collaborating, most over 70 and having no successor. I don't think we're a good success story here

@gregeganSF Every time I open Netflix it shows me pages of games. I've never played a game on Netflix. Then a bunch of stuff I'm not interested in. I have to DIG to find that there's a new episode of whatever show i've been watching...
