@entreprecariat @rra can someone explain me what is wrong with the concept of pluriversality? :thinknyan:

@entreprecariat @rra it hasn't reached 'entanglement' status just yet... Any concept can be abused (by Don Norman), especially when it becomes popular, but perhaps this popularity indicates it touches on something relevant at that time (genuine struggle against oppression, white guilt, genuine attempts to envision other worlds being possible and more but I just woke up so I'll leave it at that :breadthink: ).

The computer as symbolic sewer :www_server: β€˜Study an information system and neglect its standards, wires, and settings, and you miss equally essential aspects of aesthetics, justice and change. Perhaps if we stopped thinking of computers as information highways and began to think of them more modestly as symbolic sewers, this realm would open up a bit.’ From: Susan Leigh Star, The Ethnography of Infrastructure, 1999.

@neauoire @calcifer @jrc03c There were two threads discussing terminology, one started by calcifer and a follow-up by me. Both very rich in useful concepts and discussion :) They are the source of my LIMITS paper, which celebrates a few of these terms (and lists all of them for reference). Some links:The initial thread by calcifer: https://hackers.town/@calcifer/105409792170000331The follow-up one by me: https://post.lurk.org/@l03s/105713332161647316The paper: https://limits.pubpub.org/pub/jkrofglk/release/1I'm not arguing for one term to take the lead, but wish for all these terms to be meaningful by being practised, differently in diverse contexts, inform new practices, cross pollinate, to circulate widely :)

The call for papers for the LIMITS 2022 workshop is out, for those interested in the relation between computing, ecological limits in general, climate- and climate justice. 🌱 https://computingwithinlimits.org/2022/#sustainability #lowtech #ecology #computing

@neauoire @nintegge @rra @cblgh that could be very interesting! I was thinking of exquisite corpse/cadavre exquis, which was a surrealist paper game in text or image, and what the academic paper version of that could be. Thinking of the drawing version where a paper is folded in 4 parts, collectively writing it in several sections, everyone bringing something to the body of text, with the initial thread woven in, it could work! A federated exquisite corpse about working within constraints by breathing new life into (dead media/zombie media or simply) existing media: paper.@rra computational degrowth by (re)using, repairing, the wheel (when necessary) instead of reinventing it for soon to be invented needs?

@neauoire @nintegge @rra @cblgh that was a bit rambly perhaps, but in any case, me, @320x200 and @cmos4040 could add a section on The SKOR codex https://bleu255.com/~marloes/projects/SKOR_Codex/ If the thread allows for a paper data storage twist :)

@viznut people working on stock images related to sustainability and computing usually solve this by taking things very literal. Green + computing = a PCB with a plant on top, a laptop on top of a patch of grass, a green leaf on the return key of a keyboard, a green earth with green energy emitting streams of data around it... Lots of plants, trees and leaves coming out of keyboards. I prefer solarpunk art that actually hints at how things might materialize :)

Yesterday, during a bike ride to the picturesque Microsoft hyperscale datacenter in Middenmeer (NL), I learned that Microsoft and Google store over 2 million liters of Diesel there, of which half is burned during monthly and yearly tests of their emergency generator. I suppose this is commonly known, their way to reach 99,999 percent availability, I just never pictured datacenters having *that* many chimneys... Biking past them also lets the hyper-ness of their scale sink in 😱

@entreprecariat it's perhaps not entirely on topic because it is not about personal invitations but academic events that want to involve artists, hackers, writers, ... Often are not taking into account that those artists, hackers and writers are not backed by an institution that will cover their travel, stay and sometimes quite substantial registration fees.

I couldn't help but notice the massive Microsoft data center hiding behind these newly planted trees. 🌳 🏭 🏭 🏭 🏭 🏭 🌳Little did I know this was part of an ecosystem project! After a Microsoft team had "researched local ecology, including native habitat types and biodiversity, soil health, water and air quality, as well as community agricultural practices" they decided to use "the tools of biomimicry" to enhance their data center. This... this is biomimicry according to Microsoft.#datacenter #biomimicry #sustainability #sad

It has been 6 months since I passed my viva, yet I forgot to share my thesis here :unacceptable: (due to it feeling unreal af... until... today :) It's called 'The Image at the End of the World: Communities of practice redefining technology on a damaged Earth'. In it I describe communities which give voice and shape to different definitions and roles for technology within the polycrisis: permacomputing, computing within limits, collapse informatics, salvage computing, slow tech, redundant technology, low-tech, feminist technology, convivial computing, disability driven development and more. https://researchportal.lsbu.ac.uk/en/publications/the-image-at-the-end-of-the-world-communities-of-practice-redefin With contributions by so many amazing people!
