BTW, another reason to choose Mastodon over Twitter. The toot above took like 2 seconds to post, whether a (shorter) tweet would take a minute to be posted (if it even could be posted without failing with a network error) 🤷‍♂️

Hey Fedi, do you know if there is a federated (perhaps even #ActivityPub-powered) cooking recipe hosting service? If not, let's 👏 make 👏 this 👏 happen!I hate modern recipe websites. All of them are full with ads and tracking. The leading recipe hosting in my country loads over 30 different trackers, and that's excluding the ads!

A hundred replies later, here’s what I gathered:— people seem to like the idea :D— there are other projects with similar idea of making recipes publishing more communal— there are quite a few recipe formats: Schema.org, FatHub, RecipeML, h-recipe, Cooklang— semantic markup is a must— discoverability will be tricky— Nextcloud has a cookbook app; it is unclear how it works with (federated) Nextcloud Social— name ideas: Recipedia, Cookwyrm :blobcatgoogly2:I’m quite hyped to say the least

I have now created a repo on Codeberg with the wiki, where I'll put all gathered knowledge over the next days:https://codeberg.org/kytta/federated-recipe-directory/wiki/Homecc @garlic_onions

Is there a good (preferably FOSS) per-app network speed limiter for #macOS? Something where I can say ‘Process X may only use 1 Mbps’?softwareupdated just loves downloading the latest Monterey installer every week, which eats up the bandwidth of my whole network 😠

Saw this on one support website. If you have to write your date format after your date, you’ve failed.Use the unambiguous ISO format (2022-08-15) or spell out the month (Aug 15 2022 or 15 Aug 2022)

Oh, and by the way, this screenshot is from when a website team confirmed they started working on my account deletion. It’s been five days, and they’re still on it. Might be a very complicated SQL query…

@kev I also have a problem with spam. Weirdly enough, it's not on the email address that I publish literally everywhere in plaintext, but on my GMail address, which I've been using back before buying an own domain (so until ca. 2016) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ incredible how much the mileage varies when it comes to spam emails

Did anyone try #OpenBSD (and/or #FreeBSD, #NetBSD, etc.) as the main OS for a #RaspberryPi? I have a Model 3B+ and I wonder, whether it works smoother than Debian/Ubuntu. And, if you tried BSD on your Pi, which distro have you found works best?

@kev same as @dusnm here: never had to deal with their support. I also love their documentation a lot. They offer a Tor exit node for E2EE access to their website, which is a nice touch. I appreciate their openness when it comes to authorities' requests, and I trust them more in general for not being US-based. Their webmail leaves a lot to be desired, but since I use my email client-side, I don't care. Overall, a great provider, and I don't think I'll even consider switching any time soon.

@fatboy Fahrenheit is fine if one forgets the salt-water-ice nonsense and considers it to be a scale of hotness instead.0 °F as in "0% hot" is pretty cold100 °F as in "100% hot" is pretty hotAnything outside this range is an extreme, making "below zero" sound quite frightening. "Above 100" describes not only unpleasant weather, but also a sick person.Having said that, it's still unintuitive for someone who grew up with Celsius :) But I can't blame Americans for sticking with it either

I’ve just realized I’ve never made an #introduction post here!Hi, I’m Nikita 👋🏻I’m 23, and I’m a CS student from Braunschweig 🇩🇪Somehow, coding has become my education, my job, and my hobby — all at the same time! I call myself a ‘π-shaped software engineer’: I love trying out different technologies and languages. I am most proficient in #JavaScript for frontend and #Django / #Python for backend (hence the two ‘legs’ of π)You can go visit my website to learn more: https://www.kytta.dev/ ✨

I have enabled ‘Block remote fonts’ for every website in uBlock Origin. I have also forbidden to make requests to fonts[dot]googleapis[dot]com and fonts[dot]gstatic[dot]com.**Pros:**— every website rocks beautiful Helvetica Neue— I am not being tracked by Google and others**Cons:**— every second website uses icon fonts which don't load any more :(

To solve this, use plain SVGs! A good article that showcases using SVGs on the web: https://svgontheweb.com/TL;DR: Use `<object>` or inline `<svg>` elements for max customizability. The browser support has got very good in the meantime.Another tip: Use https://iconify.design/ by @cyberalien. It's a 10 kB script that loads icons from dozens of icon frameworks as inline SVGs inside Web Components. Can be SSR’ed for maximum speed!

I just realized a problem that everyone probably already talked about in the past.We praise #FOSS for its openness and security, but how can we be sure that the service that a company offers is the same code as what is stored in the source control? Is there a good way to audit online services? Like, how can I be sure that the code of, say, mastodon.example was not tampered with? And are there any good articles and/or books on the topic?

1st June was a big day! #Shareon got its 400th GitHub star and reached 20 MILLION monthly hits on jsDelivr. If you're in need for lightweight and privacy-friendly #ShareButtons for your project or blog, look no furtherhttps://shareon.js.org/Oh, and I also handed in my Bachelor's thesis yesterday :D#ShamelessPlug
