In case anyone was wondering, the top three metros on my wish list for the #MicroMirror project currently are Atlanta, GA, Phoenix, AZ, and Las Vegas, NV.So if you know of an ISP or DC in those areas who have plenty of egress bandwidth and would be willing to plug in a managed appliance to support free software/linux, let us know: mirror@fcix.net

Mille would recommend against working an on-call shift on Sundays. Much better to lay on the couch and be a potato.

The boomer at the dog park this morning was telling me how copper has reached $1100/oz and that's why buildings are so expensive now.

For (mostly personal) future reference, let's say you want to connect a server to the Internet on its own subnet, but IPv4 addresses are expensive so you would prefer to burn as few of them as possible.Normally, the best you can do is putting the server and its upstream router on a /31, which allocates one IP address for the server and one IP address for the router. Now let's say you're not one to let convention hold you back and you hold the forbidden knowledge that network configuration inputs like in kickstart files ask you for the full IPv4 address of both the host and the default gateway... AND IT IS NOT REQUIRED THAT THE DEFAULT GATEWAY IS ACTUALLY INSIDE THE SUBNET YOU CONFIGURED FOR THE HOST...Something like this:network --bootproto=static --ip=192.0.2.45 --netmask=255.255.255.255 --gateway=100.64.0.1And then an (Arista) router configuration like this:AnetRouter#show run interfaces eth 16interface Ethernet16 no switchport ip address 100.64.0.1/30AnetRouter#show run sec ip routeip route 192.0.2.45/32 Ethernet16If it's stupid but it works...This brought to you by the IPv4 address being the most expensive part of hosting a #MicroMirror server.

Friends poking me in a Slack that after building an IXP, an anycast DNS service, and a global Linux CDN, clearly I should do NTP next.Me: "Nah, I don't really see any problems that aren't already solved by the ntppool.org project.Friend: "What about server numbers? There's probably some problems there"Me: Makes mistake of looking...

@kyle Ok, so you've got the parts, just didn't set them up. Yeah, always great to exercise the whole system.

@kyle The EcoFlow website makes it really hard to figure out what the solar input connector is. Is it the typical XT60 or something else?

These online order numbers are really getting out of hand. When did we forget that this is all supposed to be in service of humans?

Friendly reminder that if you download software updates for Fedora or AlmaLinux from London, there's good odds that your software updates are coming from an HP thin client sitting in a road box in Surrey. This is perfectly fine, and how free software / the Internet actually works.#MicroMirror #Fedora #AlmaLinux #Linux #FOSS

Context: @warthog9 and I run a managed appliance service called MicroMirror, where we take cash donations (https://en.liberapay.com/phirephly/) and use them to deploy free software download mirrors based on the cheapest hardware possible. https://blog.thelifeofkenneth.com/2023/05/building-micro-mirror-free-software-cdn.htmlThe B4SH ISP in Surrey volunteered to host one of our appliances in their network, so they donate space, power, and transit capacity for the server we ship them to just plug in. For some reason, this was the best spot for them to plug this server is. 🤷 We are up to 35 of these Micro sized download mirrors worldwide. Because these sorts of things just tend to get out of hand for me.

Useless fun fact about Arista switches: The fan trays use the same mechanical connector as SFP optical transceivers. The pinout is obviously completely different, since it has 12V on it and only needs tachometer, speed control, and a few direction identification solder jumpers, but why not reuse the same blind mate connector?

You know those times you're shopping for something online and you assume the text is a label for the photo. And then it shows up with the text printed on it just like it's shown in the photo?

Imagine you're working on a product with an RS-232 user interface.Try and come up with as many different ways to render a backspace as possible. Go.

Backspace - space - backspace is excluded as the obvious answer which would be too simple to be portable across all terminal emulators.

New Blog Post!I now know more about Nvidia ConnectX firmware packages than I ever expected.... https://blog.thelifeofkenneth.com/2024/12/connectx-4121c-firmware.htmlthe tl;dr is that you can't compile custom firmware packages anymore because Nvidia doesn't release the MLX files for the ASICs.

#ProjectHalfDollarChaos: spent a $10, two dollar coins, and three halves on lunch. Cashier had never seen them before, and their register drawer only had three plastic Tupperware in it for nickels dimes and quarters. She was so flustered she forgot to give me the 30¢ change I was owed.
