@PINE64 Thank you! I was just confused regarding the backlight issue as it is not fixed according to the wiki in 1.2b. But I assume it's fixable in software then?

@shebang @PINE64 Do you think it's worth the upgrade for the ubports edition unless you want more RAM and the larger eMMC? I ordered the replacement board for my braveheart edition, and I'm yet not sure whether it's worth it for the ubports edition as well.

@kelbot @onosovereign Well, I guess the main benefit is that it fixes a lot of bugs. :) At least that's the reason I ordered my upgrade.

Is anyone of you into RISC-V?Finally, it looks like there is a (first?) MiniITX mainboard powered by a RISC-V CPU planned to be available in March 2021:https://www.crowdsupply.com/sifive/hifive-unmatchedI would probably miss SATA on this one, yet I wonder if this is already usable in production, e.g. for a home server. Also, getting concrete data on power consumption would be very interesting.

@benis Yes, I was asking this myself as well. Especially if you consider putting it in a larger case than Mini-ITX, there would be probably no need for a fan when paired with a typical x86 high-end heatsink from vendors such as Noctua.Another thing I would have loved to see would be DIMM slots instead of RAM soldered to the board.I still haven't made up my mind on this particular board. But overall, it's very promising to see all this progress on the #riscv front.

I did a small idle power consumption experiment with my #pinephone (PCB 1.2b). I used #plasmamobile on #pmos with all radios turned off.Starting from a charge with 86% it lasted more than 4 days. Not surprisingly, the device's case remained cool during this time.Although this is not as good as what you get from most Android devices (such as my Galaxy S3 running #replicant), I'm still very impressed about this progress. Many thanks to all who contributed to make this a reality!

@martijnbraam @feld @PINE64 @postmarketOS Amazing milestone! It's the first device I know where this was accomplished. We better don't want to know what version of Linux runs on a typical Android device (provided its modem runs on a separate chip like in the #pinephone).

@martijnbraam @feld @PINE64 @postmarketOS Yes, but only regarding the Linux version. There are good arguments regarding security why the modem should be isolated just like it is done in the #pinephone, and in the early Android days many devices did have this separation in place.Of course, on the other hand, having separate chips often comes with the trade-off of less power efficiency and higher costs. But I really hope the next #pinephone will keep these things separated.

@martijnbraam Interesting. But it just calls apk to install a package from repositories, unlike Android's sideload that installs a package from the machine you run the sideload?

@nitrokey I'm excited as well and already pre-ordered it. 🙂Yet, I was just a little bit disappointed since I was hoping for RSA 8192bit key support (although ECC might be the better option anyways).

@seb No doubts this is easier to service and upgrade than other x86 machines. However, I don't like their bold marketing and platform choice: A x86 machine with a 11th gen Intel CPU that needs the vendor's FSP blobs (and others) is certainly not "all 100% yours".Also, I fear that this project repeats the mistakes done by #fairphone - they design hardware for longetivity but ship a mainboard that highly depends on a vendor that is likely to stop updates for their blobs in the future.

@Fairphone The key insight from the fairphone "experiment" is that you can't have a sustainable phone without sustainable (read: free) software. The best repair options won't help if you can't get firmware updates (as seen dramatically with the FP1). I posted an article back in 2019 on this topic:https://www.kulesz.me/post/110-smartphones/I wish the next #fairphone will be based on freedom-friendly hardware and will finally replace Android with one of the truly sustainable alternatives such as #postmarketos.

The hardware of my Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini VE is protected fine by an #otterbox Defender. But how about the software?I thought it would deserve an OS that is more secure than the "latest" Android 4.4 when Samsung stopped supporting it.Now experimenting with #postmarketos running #plasmamobile:

@joeligj12 Yes, however be careful as only the S4 Mini VE (value edition) works "okay'ish" at the moment. The VE has a different SoC than other S4 Mini variants. There is support for other S4 Mini variants in #postmarketOS as well, however, it is not as good to be granted the "community device" maturity level yet.

Published my new article:"Recommended procedure for installing Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye) on ARM64-based machines"https://www.kulesz.me/post/160-debian-bullseye-sysvinit-arm64-install/This is a major rewrite of my previous articles. I updated it for Debian 11 and tried to make it more concise.#debian #bullseye #arm #tutorialFeedback appreciated!

@tuxdevices @martijnbraam Thanks for sharing. Hardware-wise, I would argue that the Pinephone is a bit more free than the devices supported by Replicant as it runs a stable and free bootloader. However, one important aspect neglected here is security. Software-wise, #replicant only offers vastly outdated Android versions with tons of security holes in their stable branch. On the other hand, #postmarketos offers recent software.See also my old mid-2019 article on that:https://www.kulesz.me/post/110-smartphones/

I am looking for the "most missing" native apps for mobile Linux to be built in 4th semester student internship projects using libhandy. My criteria:- no such app exists or is in development with substantial progress- open source reference implementation is available (e.g. desktop or Android app)- the app is small and not very complex (good example: offline dictionary)- the app is useful for a large userbase and not only in a niche.Suggestions/ideas warmly welcome!
