@foone Every job being suggested to me in Scotland is very open about being for major defense contractors to work on munitions or delivery systems for munitions. The fact is that, to some extent, the tech is very cool. “Dragonfire” absolutely bangs as a project name! Alas my red lines (AI, Bombs, Crypto) are the same as yours, which basically seems to leave HFT and e-commerce website mills. 😔

@futurebird Is it one of the ones with a suction cup so that you can use it on a whiteboard?

@futurebird That's awesome. I hope you and your students have a bunch of fun with it!

@futurebird Technically the #Unicode superscript and subscript codepoints are for compatibility only. In newly generated documents these are preferably treated like underline or bold face, and communicated via markup or out of band formatting data.TL;DR Yes

@foone I wonder what's going on on the “Private Use Area” planes 😏

@futurebird Under, “other,” I would include a type of tone-deafness: text in a style that's grammatically correct and almost entirely sensical, but just… has little stylistic relationship to the way a human would idiomatically write in that context. Does that make sense? It's very, “You know it if you see it.”

@dalias That seems lukewarm at best. I think you could replace “C“ and “Rust” with any programming language and it would still be true.“‘vibe coded’ Lua is a far greater risk than well engineered Brainfuck.”

@neil I loved my Zaurus C-3000. Even as a Sharp employee in 2005 it was hard to get one in the UK. Mine is languishing in a box somewhere, untouched since the day I acquired the even-better Nokia N900.

@futurebird Oxygen Not Included is similar in that respect. One of the main attractions for replayability is to find ways to exploit corner cases in the game mechanics — infinite liquid compression and material duplication being examples…

@foone I once permanently damaged a laptop by compiling OpenOffice on it. The build took 23 hours and the keyboard never worked reliably again. This must have been in late 2003 or early 2004…

After almost a decade of not using #Linux on my home machine, it's reassuring to discover that some things haven't changed since I've been away. Like the fact that it still won't reliably recover from sleep on even the most boring of commodity hardware…

@futurebird I was told yesterday that someone in our town recently tried to get fitted carpets in their bathroom, but couldn't find any contractor willing to do it…It's 2025! Why would anyone want this?! Buy some slippers!

@foone Have you tried using gerbv on the output of KiCad?(I'm a bit out of date because I haven't been able to look at open source EDA tools for almost a decade for contractual reasons)

@whitequark It turns out that there is quite a punishing social cost to saying things like “an average person is quite credulous and tends to trust systems when they present themselves as something” in a workplace setting when the employer is “all in” on force-feeding everyone LLM Kool-Aid@david_chisnall

@futurebird I think the #slopocalypse and #enshittification are different concepts, aren't they? The latter is occurring independently from “AI”
