@lancetay Just yesterday I received one of these UV-K5(8) as a gift to myself for under the KR1STmas tree. 😀 I'm looking forward to loading it with the modified firmware and play with it, mostly to see what it can do on 2m/70cm SSB. The price is certainly right on these little rigs. 😀

Wow, what a chaotic ISS pass earlier this afternoon. The attached audio sample of the recording I made sums it up pretty accurately. #ariss #iss #hamradio #satellites

@stephen Excellent work! I really like what you are doing here and look forward to purchasing the hardware to play with it when it becomes available. Many moons ago (early 2000's) I was very involved in APRS and wrote my fair share of software for the platform, including software that ran on Russian handheld gaming computers that could provide a 900MHz link. I abandoned APRS because there was no forward movement, and frankly, became entirely boring because of it.I'm very excited to see this!

Santa brought me Quansheng UV-5k(8). A YTer in a recent video said he couldn't recommend this HT because it was "dirty" and showed a screenshot of TinySA Ultra from which the viewer was to infer that the radio was not satisfying FCC requirements. The FCC requires harmonics to be 40dB down from the fundamental and the video showed that the second harmonic was "only" 38.8dB down. I'm including a screenshot of that video.Time to do some measurements! #hamradio #amateurradio1/4

Judging by the gain (-40dB) and attenuator (21dB) settings on his TinySA I suspect he did an antenna to antenna measurement, meaning he used some sort of antenna attached to his TinySA to pick up the signals radiated from his UV-5k. The FCC requires measurements on the feedline to the antenna. That means you need to use a coupler. I'm a bit puzzled that when he measured a number so close to FCC specs he didn't suspect his measurement method before declaring the radio "dirty". 2/4

In my test setup I inserted a Narda 30661B coupler between the HT and a dummy load, and then connected the same TinySA Ultra with a 20dB attenuator to the coupler. See the attached image to see the test setup. Note that the coupler is a microwave coupler and that the sensitivity rolls off below 700 MHz. What this means is that the sensitivity lowers as you go lower infrequency, so the measured differences between the fundamental and harmonics below 700 MHz are *larger* than measured. 3/4

When you look at the image of the TinySA Ultra, the second harmonic is 45dB down from the fundamental frequency (146 MHz), and the 3rd harmonic is 49dB down. The UV-5k(8) was transmitting at full power on 146 MHz.It looks to me that the radio is satisfying FCC requirements. If you find error with my assumptions or method, please let me know. I'm just an amateur, not an RF engineer. I'm in it to learn!4/4

@HopelessDemigod There has been some interesting tropo in your area over the past week or so. This morning too, but didn't hear any DX. Or were you thinking of something else? I'm actually thinking of giving up on 222, 432 and 1296 here. There just isn't that much to work on those bands. That would also free up some spots on the coax entrance to add some antennas for HF and MF perhaps.

@HopelessDemigod I hear ya! My interests in different parts of the hobby seem to wax and wane. I love weak signal operations on 222 and up, but I'm growing a little tired of exchanging the same grid square with the same stations in the same contests. I'm also fairly remote from anyone else with similar interests, so that leaves very few opportunities to experiment with different things on those higher bands, especially at low power. I really would like to focus more on 23cm EME.

@ve3qbz @somafm I still have an old SiriusXM radio in the car that still works w/o a sub, but unfortunately, I can't receive any reggae stations on it anymore I think. I think they went to online streaming now or some high channel numbers that my old radio doesn't have.

@tk Yes! Signals would be about 3dB weaker from aligned polarization. It's not a bad option at all.
