Words like “patriarchy,” “mansplaining,” “toxic masculinity,” “whiteness,” “non-binary,” and “Islamophobia” exploded in popularity. I think it can be explained as a social/tactical shift caused by the internal logic of leftism, but maybe other factors are involved. Some rich people did benefit....

A related take on the culture war and the powers of social media."The Left has won the culture wars. Now they’re just driving around shooting survivors"“The most powerful people in the world today are the people who are writing the algorithms for Twitter, Facebook and Instagram because they’re controlling the spread of information. They’re literally rewriting people’s brains. They’re programming the culture.”https://www.redstate.com/alexparker/2019/06/14/tech-billionaire-joe-rogan-‘the-left-won-culture-wars-now-theyre-just-driving-around-shooting-survivors/

@ThomasWic Many reasons. He ran a smart campaign. He opposed illegal immigration. Lots of people wanted a change from the Obama years. Hillary was a bad candidate who ran a bad campaign. Democrats were split over Bernie. Some were "high on their own supply" and took Trump's defeat for granted. But I think relentless anti-Trump bias by the MSM and Silicon Valley social media took a toll. Not enough to beat him, but it probably cost him a few states. And their bias is ramping up for 2020.

@JeanK I don't underestimate patriots, but I think you underestimate the power of the people controlling social media. Most voters don't follow politics they way we do. They see what's in their social media feeds. It's proven that votes can be shifted by manipulating those feeds.

@JeanK In a democracy, the masses of undecided voters and people who don't care much about politics are crucial. Parties try to rally them with persuasion and GOTV efforts. Social media has unprecedented power to influence them, and social media (and the world's biggest search engine) is controlled by the left. That's a BFD.https://www.pnas.org/content/112/33/E4512

@umad80 @JeanK I never meant to imply that social media was everything, just that it's a Very Big Thing. Ground game and TV ads are fine, but are old school. Today leftists at Facebook, Twitter, and Google are deciding what *billions* of people see, every single day.

@ThomasWic @umad80 @JeanK "It's clear that Trump is working to give them that idea." [That social media allowed the Left to win the culture war.]In many ways the Left *did* win. We have same sex marriage that we didn't vote for. Every major corporation now celebrates Pride month. Drag queen story time for kids is a thing. But Trump can use that momentum against them, in a judo/Aikido way, by (e.g.) trolling them into "going too far."

@ThomasWic @umad80 @JeanK Many people haven't made up their minds! That's true every election. As polarizing as Trump is, there are still many people who don't know what to think. They have mixed feelings, or they only tune into politics at election time. Political parties always have to work to persuade those people. Thus it's crucial to understand the "hidden persuasion" power of big tech, and how they use it.

@ThomasWic Woah, hang on! That should not be a problematic post here. I'm not here to demoralize! I may not agree with everyone on everything, but to me that's within bounds. It's not anti-gay. I've had gay friends and colleagues for years.

@RonOgletree @JeanK "Your attempt to distract from the real enemy of truth of the mass media is telling."Who, me? I'm agreeing that the mass media is often an "enemy of truth"!Like I said in another thread, Trump did overcome social media and MSM bias in 2016, but it cost him votes, and it costs him support today. In order to combat that bias, we have to recognize it and know how it works. It would be foolish to dismiss real evidence that Big Tech can and does sway votes.

@ThomasWic @RonOgletree @JeanK I bet on Trump in 2016. I've supported him here, elsewhere, and even under my real name on Facebook (with some bad fallout). I've been following you and a few other MAGA types for years, because I find you interesting, insightful, and inspiring.I am MAGA but also live and work in tech in a center of anti-Trump hatred and bias. I know how hard they will work to defeat Trump "by any means necessary." I want us all to know what'll be thrown at us.

@ThomasWic I know that "Pride" is more than that, but it does include that. And there is a strong bias against "dead, white, European, male culture." As a pithy statement, I think it hits the mark. It's not meant to stir up hatred. Sheesh. You've read a bunch of my toots. You've favorited and boosted some of them. I think I'm staying within the rules and making a positive contribution.

@REX This is a great thread and an example of why I'm on QV. I would add to #6: Progressives value intentions and words over results. One example: downplaying the horrors of Communism while ranting endlessly about "fascists" they see everywhere. (In reality I think all American fascists put together wouldn't fill a college gym.) Progs see Communists as "well-intentioned," so they largely get a pass and associating with them carries little or no taint.

@REX Obama and the rest of the coup plotters have a *lot* to worry about. They know Trump's got them by short hairs. (I hope I can use that term here!) They have to get their stories straight. They have to worry about the prisoner's dilemma, which is a big deal when dozens are involved. I think you're right about "knowing where the wind is blowing." Trump has the power now, and Obama is a has-been.

@REX Was the "black ledger" used as evidence in Manafort's trial? I think they got him for tax evasion and FARA violations. So while this may well implicate the people you say, it may not help Manafort.

@REX @Debradelai Isn't it fascinating how certain articles like that get little attention? They appear in mainstream publications that can't just be dismissed as "right-wing" with substantial charges against the Obama administration, but the rest of the MSM seems to ignore them. The big Project Cassandra article was another. As Jim Treacher once said:
