We're willing to blame unusual flu and RSV waves for the unusual strep wave, but even the commenters on this article are just like "yeah this is really brutal I've just had illness after illness the last year" without any dot-connecting going on (which is that covid makes you 4x more susceptible to other viral infections, and 50% more susceptible to bacterial and fungal infections) https://arstechnica.com/science/2023/03/spike-in-deadly-strep-infections-linked-to-wave-of-flu-rsv-in-us-kids/?comments=1&comments-page=1

Today in insane denial of COVID's harm to the immune system, the CDC speculates that one reason Candida has exploded 10x since its pre-pandemic rate is because, due to COVID causing us to be super careful about aerosols, we have gotten careless about environmental disinfection. Can't make this shit up. #covid #immunedamage https://arstechnica.com/science/2023/03/deadly-drug-resistant-yeast-gained-ground-more-drug-resistance-amid-covid/

Chinese expert claims immunity debt as an explanation for current mycoplasma pneumonia outbreak: https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202311/1302731.shtmlBut, here's an NIH pub. concluding that a good case of that disease is protective for up to 9 years, while protection from a milder case fades after 2 years. So the immunity debt hypothesis — which posits SUB-mild cases, essentially homeopathic doses — doesn't seem to be a cause here. Leaving weakened immune systems as the likely explanation #covid https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/6406617/

As it turns out, regs passed to target second hand smoke must have had more to do with easy performative legislative wins against an outgroup than with public health. Or maybe important people just really hate getting their Friday night dress-up costumes smelling like smoke. #covid

@rchusid Here’s hoping it proceeds quickly, as most people who seriously want to avoid a Covid infection have to balance that desire against the need to play along with the group, be it at work or elsewhere. Ostracism has real consequences. I wear an N95 everywhere I don’t lose social clout by doing so, & rely on nasal sprays etc* when I have to show up & not be thought crazy by people whose opinion affects me. They’re not gonna get Long COVID fast enough to rethink their bias

@yogthos I worked on the technical side of consumer packaged goods branding for most of my career, and this trend was the thing all the strategists seemed most eager not to see or think about, as the entire category was founded on the existence of a durable middle class. (Now I work on the technical side of high end spectacle-events, to my relief)

@yogthos yikes, so seldom do we get to hear plutocratic sang-froid explain its thinking so plainly.

@foone A long time ago, if I thought of a joke to make on twitter, I would first do a search to make sure it was original. If it turned out to have already been done, I’d merely retweet the prior art. I’m not exactly proud about it now.
