I still remember when I got a (valid) bug report for a plugin I had written for compiz fusion, including screen shots of the settings dialogs. The user was a fellow Norwegian, but unlike me, they were using the Norwegian translations and they were so bad I had to ask them to switch to English because even though I understood the words, I couldn't tell what settings they were refering to IN MY OWN CODE.This is why I don't want translations if the original is in EITHER Norwegian OR English.

I'm getting a lot of suggestions about "per app language". Let me emphasise how wrong that "solution" is.First: this is NOT a corner case! The wast majority of the world do not speak English as their mother tounge. I don't know how many are fluent enough to prefer English over a translated version, but I'm betting it's a huge amount.Second: this puts more work on the user, work most people wont be able to do. Essentially, this is a solution that solidifies the problematic attitude.

Asking hundreds of millions of users to make per-app settings because apparently that's good enough is an insane take.

And just for the record, this magic per app thing people keep suggesting over and over does not exist on my phone. It tells you something of the scope of the attitude problem when something like this takes over FIFTEEN YEARS to implement. And seen from the user, this is an O(n) solution. It should be O(1).

Sigh... containers may solve some problems, but now we have so many people completely incapable of producing software meant to co-exist on a machine. Like.... points for using /usr/local, but /usr/local/foo.conf isn't a smart way to store configuration files. And /usr/local/foo/(data files) isn't much better. And you end up with software that's largely unconfigurable, ("just use env varibles" doesn't scale), and extremely difficult to troubleshoot because everything is packaged uniquely...

@brewsterkahle @internetarchive We find that even "anonymized" ip addresses usually need to be treated as pii. Though quantity and duration matters a lot as to how sensitive it really is. For example, if all you know is when an IP is active over a period of time, it's not difficult to correlate that with real life behaviour and it doesn't matter if it's "hashed"/"anonymized" or not.I feel there's a surprising amount of nuance here, and it's usually best to err on the side of caution.

So which OS do people here use anyway?(Edit: I thought this bit got inserted automatically on every single poll on Mastodon, but I guess not, so: Please boost to make this a more fair and accurate poll!)

@jasongorman I'm nodding along with this... I also feel like there is a WHOLE lot more waterfall in this business than people like to admit. Where people design and implement a big thing, nitpick on it for years, then redesign and reimplement it a few years later.

@foone reminds me of a background image I saw at a computer party about a quarter of a century ago. Obviously meant to be edgy anti Linux with a FreeBSD demon skewering Tux with a pitchfork. The computer was running windows ME....

@futurebird @andrewfeeney Interesting enough, as a Norwegian I still deal with imperial units when it comes to monitors and TVs, boats and sandwiches(thanks subway). So when people use imperial units, that's my mental comparison. E.g.: He's six foot tall! = He's about as tall as a small dingy."Move a few feet to the left" = please move the length of a few sandwiches to the leftAny other unit than feet and inches might as well be made up though. I have no reference for how long a yard is...

Having the name of the programming language as an easily identifiable part of the application or project name is a big red flag.

@wolf480pl Kinda? I'm not claiming an absolute rule here. But stuff like "gopass" (of which there are TWO "unrelated" projects), where the only selling point is "it's compatible with pass, but written in go" (same selling point for both implementations) has me worried. Makes me think the point was to write something in a a specific language, not actually improve anything.

@futurebird Forgive the digression, but I'm reminded of math teacher I had that introduced us to the subject of probabilites by having the class divide in two. One half were to toss a coin 100 times and note the result, the other half made up the coin tosses. He were to tell who did what individually based only on the notes. He got all of them right, because we all underestimated the probability of four identical tosses in a row.Highly motivating teacher.

It's pretty fascinating to see large american corporations with a global presence refer to Dublin as "North Europe" when you live in Norway.I suppose that's like Americans refering to Texas as part of South America

One of the, by far, best decisions I made last year was to start following cats, dogs and sheep of mastodon tags the moment the result of the us election was in. Sorely needed a feed that was less depressing to cope with.
