Thinking once again of leaving mastodon.social as dice.camp is now muting it. Trying to pick out an instance that:- Does a good job of moderation- Isn't blocked by instances I want to interact with and isn't likely to be- Doesn't block instances I want to interact with and isn't likely to- Is likely to be around for a while- Isn't too niche- Is accepting new members...- ... and doesn't require the equivalent of a college essay to apply to join

All of this is made more difficult because some of those factors create tension with others. Larger instances can raise more money to pay for expenses and hire moderators, but are also much harder to moderate.I want an inclusive, well moderated instance, but I also want to be able to interact with infosec instances, which are sometimes blocked because some infosec people have ties to law enforcement.

Additional difficulties:I don't know how to find out what instances an instance blocks. Some instances appear to be accepting new sign-ups, but they are actually manually reviewing sign-ups and might take a long time to approve you ... or might never approve you.

@clive @tim @paninid Reading the original Golden Age gave me a different perspective on this. Superman was always disguising himself. As a boxer, as a mine worker, as a munitions seller, whatever. But his face always looked the same. I realized this was for the reader's benefit. Superman is a master of disguise, much like The Human Target, but he's always drawn the same way so we, the reader, can always recognize him in a panel. The art is not meant to represent the "reality" of the situation.

@clive @tim @paninid I do also like Grant Morrison's take on Clark Kent from All Star ... he's just such a schlub that no one could think he was Superman.

@clive @tim @paninid As for his reporting chops... I seem to recall him being described at times as a Pulitzer winner, but I don't recall any descriptions of particular stories written by him. He is always overshadowed by Lois Lane.

@Wolven I'm not even sure "dangers of escaping into virtuality" is a theme *at all* yet alone the main one.

@onan First thought: The value of suffering is that you can empathize with other people who suffer, which at least in theory can lead to action to reduce suffering for others.
