I seem to carry a technology curse that causes all online meeting applications to fail in one way or another when I am doing an online talk. Nothing fazes me now -- not being unable to see audiences, having slides that appear minutes after I show them, being cut off and having to rejoin, or -- my personal favourite -- giving a long talk where I could not see the audience and finding the platform had crashed globally halfway through & I'd delivered my speech to the cosmic void

Meanwhile over here on 🦣 -- the joys of living free of the shackles of algorithmic determination are more apparent every day. I see SOOO many more interesting posts, from such an amazing variety of people, instead of being channeled into whatever narrower sidestream suits a company that wants to monetise me. I don't want to just see more of what I 'like' -- I want to *discover* what I might like (or not!) from seeing fresh ideas & opinions & projects & artwork etc. The pleasure of serendipity

TBH I don't know how much I want ex-Twitter engineers and designers offering suggestions about adding algorithms and quote tweeting to 🦣. This place *does not have to be just like Twitter*. People actually LEFT Twitter, remember? It's nice to have that algorithmic manipulation gone & those design 'features'. Why not go create an alternative to Mastodon, instead, and just stop, STOP, trying to make it into your old workplace?

Reading of several cases where POC have encountered problems/bans for discussing experiences/issues of racism... continues to make me wonder how Mastodon will negotiate moderation & bans at scale when valid mid-ground areas exist where many value discussion, not silence & issues/solutions/problems are multi-dimensional. Mastodon has powerful user filtering/block tools & maybe more could be done by users, rather than from a top down moderation end, or pple cld go to an ultra-sheltering instance?

Maybe as time goes on, there will be directories of instances/server communities based on moderation policy scores on sliding scales... and over time, more diversity amongst admins and mods. But: having been an admin/mod on lists and boards, and having chatted with others of same experience now on Mastodon: all of us think there are some really problematical issues brewing (and already emerging).

BTW some of the powerful tools any of us can use are: filters, muting, blocking, blocking all the boosts made by any individual, blocking an entire server. And yeah, sure, there should be good protective moderation rules in place BUT we can all also help create the experience that best suits us individually. And: you can have all the moderation rules you want but you are likely to see stuff you may not like esp. on federated timelines UNLESS you use some personal management options in settings,

It's worth remembering every time you are here that every post you make is not being processed by a monetising algorithm, and your data is not being gathered and auctioned to advertisers with every nano-second you spend Mastodoning. This really is not emphasised enough! It is a HUGE difference

Anyone have views on good forum software options? I've used phpBB, then moved to VBulletin and considered Xenforo a few years back. I'd prefer a FOSS option though have to say I have nominal tech ability but do have a live-in programmer 😏 . However I do have enough to have managed phpBB years ago including inserting some tweaks into the code (written by others). I'd need to move vBulletin db content from a 4.1 (old!!!) board. Thanks for any opinions!

@Aviva_Gary yes she got onto it herself and was redirected to her own much larger bed though that said she often chooses the smaller dogs’ beds and can fold herself up quite compactly
