@lauren it just would seem like an amazing overreaction to me if an entire instance had blocked you.I wonder if Mastodon is designed to propagate block notices to the target server. If not, it seems troubling that an admin could block a user on another server, and that user would never even know it, so could not appeal.

@lauren I'd still rather get silently instance blocked than be barraged by rampant misinformation and hate posts, and perhaps there's a chance that the Mastodon devs may address this issue. We *know* there's no chance Twitter will address its many shortcomings, because Musk doesn't believe they're shortcomings at all.

@lauren I knew Adams tooks some of his bits from the Bill Dana Show, but I didn't know Dr. Smith was in that too! I'll have to find some of those.Dana's Get Smart episode is one of my favorites, though that's more for Siegfried and Shtarker's goofy exchanges.

@smallpatatas I thought the big selling point of federation was exactly that. Instances could decide to federate with Meta or not as they saw fit.The Reddit situation is not really comparable, precisely because they are a centralized service; if a hypothetical Reddit had been an ActivityPub instance, then they couldn't have tried to charge millions of dollars for access to their API.

@smallpatatas I do agree that it's a concern, and something we should keep an eye on. But I also think it's not worth worrying about unless Meta actually creates an ActivityPub service and tries to federate.

@seanm @malwaretech what do we think those levers are (besides "social pressure")? Not to be argumentative, I tend to agree with you and EFF. But I also don't want KiwiFarms to be able to operate so easily. So how do we get rid of them without putting "good" free speech at risk?

@evacide was that the camera thread, and if so, was there something specific that triggered the regret? From what I could tell most of the replies were fairly reasonable (though perhaps I've blocked the people or instances who originated the worst replies).
