@bitflipped, this is a part of my concern. I'm also concerned that once Meta has used us as bait, they'll start screaming about how Mastodon is rife with sexually deviant material and get ISPs to block Mastodon as was done back in the day with USENET. If "Threads" has the same failures of content moderation and user protection as the rest of Meta's offerings, they're bound to get defederated. I hope it happens quickly.

@PhilGastwirth There's a non-zero chance that there are multiple audio mixes that are distributed with the film for different users-- IMAX, regular theaters, streaming services, broadcast TV, and perhaps more. This is part of the reason why watching movies at home has crappy audio- the people doing the mixing haven't predicted what you'll be using to hear it.

@grammargirl @HollyGoDarkly I have no love for apostrophes. I use them, but most of the time the meaning would be just as clear without them. Lots of people are sticking them into novel names, too, just for style, not for clarity.

@PhilGastwirth TVs are the same way. Press Input. Wait. Press Input Again. Wait. If you don't wait for it to catch up, you can sometimes skip too far ahead. But what makes me crazy is that when you turn on the TV, it may be on the input you want, but will automagically switch to input 1 whether or no.

If I use your app to "skip the line" and your app texts me to LMK my order is at the pick up spot, but when I go inside it's not there and I have to wait in the line, then your app fails.

@mekkaokereke @Legit_Spaghetti "And cops don't even advertise, and yet the anti-Black news story framing of criminal justice persists🤷🏿♂️" I think it's because police chiefs etc. have the ability to grant reporters access. It's not money, it's access that reporters want so they bend backwards not to offend their sources.

@itnewsbot I'm not exonerating Google, but why didn't all of those concerned residents drag some logs across the roadway or spurge for some orange cones and yellow tape?

@MishaalRahman Wow, such nifty features. How about searching IPTC tags in metadata? I have nearly 100k photos tagged and google can't find the ones I want because it doesn't read the tags. I'm staying with flickr, which allows me to find the pics I want almost instantly. Ask Photos to find an Elm Tree in my collection and it just shows me any picture with a tree. It's useless. #flickr #GooglePhotos

@hn100I love how the train maker is denying their culpability. Why should we believe the corporation? They say 'our code is clean!' I say, "Give us your source code and prove it!"

Seemingly there is no way for ad-supported sites to run ads that don't track the site visitors. I sure do wonder how this worked when newspapers and magazines sold print ads without tracking. We need better privacy laws, not just better privacy tech. I don't believe advertisers would stop advertising if they weren't allowed to track site visitors.

@vees Ad buyers can't look at a site to see if the ad is present?

@vees Newspapers used to run different editions -- they would print little dots to indicate if it was the first, second, or third print run, eg. ., .., or ...They also could customize the edition depending on where the trucks were taking them. When you bought an ad in a newspaper, you had to trust they would run it as you hired them to run it. If there were no tracking allowed, then your "constantly changing audience" would just be site visitors. Ad buyers would pick sites that run articles that are read by the categories of person they wish to reach.

@vees Then the ad buyer should put the ad on their own server and count the hits. It's not rocket surgery.

@vees Then I guess if we disallow tracking you'd have to base your ad buys on past ad performance, or survey your target audience to see what % can recall the ads.
