I opened a window and one of my eyes soon started to itch. By the time I figured it was the hot air from the heater, the eye started to hurt and was red. So I pulled my tube bandana over the eye to let it calm down, and after about half an hour opened the eye again. Judging by look at the keyboard, my “normal” eye has seen its keys greyish and somewhat yellow, as if it were twilight now (it isn’t), while the eye I opened just now has seen it bright white. Then I’ve turned my head to the window, and there was difference like between ISO 50 and 150, if my eyes were cameras. I tried to look with both eyes and it broke my brain. It felt like the images from both eyes each went to its separate brain. Kinda funny, I think I’ll repeat it sometime again. @fuggy @Curvin @Terry I’m not against people building upon what they like per se, there are just multiple nuances to that.Good things are good, because they were originally made. The creativeness is always based on drawing from various sources. From old and new. Guryanov was a fashionista, other members, including Tsoi, meant themselves painters, they were drawing impressions from the western music (like Duran Duran) too. But still their music and lyrics were unique. Tsoi’s wife remembered, that while they were staying at her mother’s apartments, Viktor has read nearly everything in the library. The perestroika of the late 80s changed their attitude from romantic, fleeting and careless songs to serious and thought-provoking. And with that, their song still contained a bit of irony and sardonic satire. To create something similar to Kino, a band should have trodden a similar development path. Kino was not the only good band, which has appeared in the 80s in the SU (or nearly after its collapse), but there was no other quite like them. Together these bands form what is now known as “Russian rock”, yet each band sounds differently, and Kino is but one of its facets.I mean, you can’t just listen to something, and create something that would turn out alike. It would be an artificial mock-up, albeit it may have some grain of creativity. While the music is eternal (and thus can be drawn from), the mindset is something that forms in real time and highly differs based on what you feed to your mind. In general, I think to aim to create “something that would be like them”, steering one’s own creative impulse to match something, is a bad idea. It’s best when that impulse develops on its own. Then, if we speak about exposing Kino to other people, this will mean two things: either big companies take that, seeing the demand in it, and producing an entire factory of various “Kino-looking” and “Kino-sounding” soulless bands of teenagers, or you get single artists drawing from it in good will, but producing something totally different, than what you would like to see (just more Kino). Because an unrestrained creative impulse (if we call it that), finds its own way and turns out not alike the source. Just like Tsoi is not Bruce Lee, and the music and singing that you hear while listening to Kino doesn’t make you remember Duran Duran. ***That said, there are exceptions: there is the band Город¹, which uses Tsoi’s published drafts, and occasionally here and there you may stumble upon tracks which inevitably remind you of Kino². However, the latter kind is rare and the head of the Город band is a an old dude who is as old as Tsoi would be now. So this is an exception which confirms the rule: only those who belong to that time and bear a similar mindset are able to create in a similar spirit. @Saber @Tactical @bronze @eee I once realised something about our life while thinking about isekais. Seeing how the Japanese are obsessed with the genre, making it into a sort of staple food, I tried to apply that onto my (subjective) understanding of their society and figure out what’s so precious about isekai. One thing that bothered me in particular is how you often have to die before the story would start. And that’s basically it: while for most people on the west thoughts about “next life” or something like that is a nice fantasy, that you would delve into once in a couple of years – a fantasy and nothing more – for the Japanese /it is a strong desire to live the next life/. They want it /now/, as they’re already sick of the world that they see. They want it so bad, that they won’t accept any fancy walk-in-the-park transition via gate, portal or opening a magic casket. This life must stop and stop forever, for the new one to start. Only this way that “next life” can acquire properties of being decently real, desirable and worthy in their opinion.
