Btw a few myths floating around the #fediverse around the recent layoffs that don’t seem to be supported by fact.

The idea that Google initiated their layoffs in response to TCI Fund letter is ridiculous. TCI is not a significant shareholder but more tellingly the timing doesn’t work out. Layoffs take time to plan in a normal company (as always Musk’s Twitter is the asterisk). These have been in the works for months.

Similarly the narrative that these companies dramatically over hired during the pandemic isn’t supported by the data. They may have seen a decline in attrition but the hiring looks roughly a pace. These are people taking advantage of an economic downturn and industry consensus to do a layoff without taking the hit. It’s like if your site is down because US-East-1 is down you get a bit of a pass even though we all know you should have done a better job.

Part 3 of "Software and its Discontents" is out. This builds on part 1 and 2 to talk about the economics of software in the Internet era, and how it's changed. https://laughingmeme.org/2023/01/29/software-and-its-discontents-part-3-the-magic.html

Your periodic reminder that the most likely outcome for any software project is that you’re building the wrong thing that no one wants. Organize yourselves accordingly.

The low odds of success are one of the reasons I think folks worry too much about duplicated effort. If by some miracle you manage to get two distinct working implementations you know you’re on to something.

Just a reminder, the way you evaluate yourself as a leader is how much both the individuals and teams in your organization grow in their capacity to achieve hard goals. Everything else is a distraction.

I almost never watch these kinds of videos, but OMFG, this is one on Zipline is awesome. I remember hearing about them when they started, but seeing where they've gotten to is absolutely mind blowing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOWDNBu9DkU

In Las Vegas for the first time in 15 years (and then it was just a layover on a cross country drive). What do I do?

A challenge we ran into at Dropbox and I’m seeing again at Adobe is there is a compelling ecosystem of developers and modern tools for doing native Apple development but not Windows. Which feels backwards given market size. So many conversations of “Sure it would be great in Swift but then what do we do for Windows?” to justify janky technology

Like Google had an explicit strategy to make the desktop irrelevant as a development platform for years, but I wonder if Microsoft did more to contribute to this by simply not having a clear modern ecosystem. (strange in the era when, for the first time in my career, I use development tools from Microsoft every day)

Is there anyone on the beat looking at approaches to using AI in software development? Coding has always been the easiest part of software development making code gen the most boring application but there are so many other possibilities. Jack Clark (jack-clark.net) feels like the best broad coverage but I’d love to find someone focusing on software development in particular

On my mind because the software development practices and tools we developed over the last decade of cheap money (see "Software and its Discontents") are too costly to actually operate to positive ROI.

@danhon @jimray @simon @luis_in_brief @FeralRobots Simon is a treasure and should be short listed for a genius grant multiple times over and also I’m genuinely worrying about our community’s loss of curiosity that we feel any one person is sufficient to the moment to understand what is certainly the largest shift in computering in the last 15 years if not longer
