Here’s a fun maths problem: if a country’s imports from a £14.5tr trading bloc comprised of 27 sovereign states decrease by 29% while exports to that bloc decrease by 41%, which country is worse off as a result of #Brexit? #ToryMaths

I expect you know the answer without doing the maths, though the problem is of course underspecified. Bonus points for saying what it depends on!

Twitter to end free third-party API access with one week’s notice. After banning third-party apps without explanation, this is another step in #Twitter’s demise as a social platform. #TwitterTakeover https://apple.news/A_O-aGPqAQ1en_rRZqWxZsw

This also means that lots of tools that have sprung up around #Twitter, including migration and cross-posting to #Mastodon, will stop working. So if you’re thinking of migrating but have yet to take the plunge, now is the time! #TwitterMigration #TwitterAPI

A 1-hour single ticket on #Oslo public transport now costs 40 NOK. That’s £3.20/$3.85. Not so bad if you are travelling across the city, but prohibitive for short bus or tram journeys.#Ruter should really introduce a single-leg short journey ticket for say 20 NOK. I’m all for an integrated #publicTransport system, but it has to be affordable. #LifeInNorway

Long term, they should consider moving to a pay-as-you-go system like the London #OysterCard where you swipe in and out on each leg of your journey and the system gives you the best overall price. But that requires a lot of expensive infrastructure, and most residents have season tickets anyway, so there’s something to to be said for the simplicity of a flat-rate system—particularly if the rate were zero. The reality of the UK’s two-party system is that #Labour only needs to be slightly less right-wing than the Tories to win an election, which is what we’re seeing. UK politics won’t change until there is #ElectoralReform to adopt #ProportionalRepresentation instead of #FPTP.

Brexit and immigration are a case in point. The Tory government is doing all it can to make these issues into a trap for Labour, whose response is to position itself just to the left of the Tories. This will put many people off, but given the alternative it makes sense to vote Labour anyway to keep the Tories out (except in Scotland where people have turned to the SNP, though that may be changing). Consequently nobody gets to vote for what they want and the country lurches further to the right.

Supporters of #FPTP say that it produces strong government. But that’s lie. It produces flip-flopping from left to right, with governments spending most of their time undoing the work of their predecessors while ignoring priority issues on which there is consensus. Nothing moves forward, people become alienated, and corruption sets in. It’s been this way all my adult life, and there’s little sign that things will change soon without serious pressure from the electorate for democratic reform.

😆 In general ‘AI’ is a very poor name for a bunch of technologies that enable computers to do better pattern matching.Even worse, #OpenAI is now using ‘AGI’ to mean better-than-human level performance (at what task exactly is unclear), which isn’t what the phrase is generally understood to mean at all.The more you look into this whole area, the more you realise there’s a lot of smoke and mirrors: marketing hype dressed up as technological revolution. #AI #AIEthicshttps://mastodon.social/@jamesbritt/111466685493641006
