A review in Bloomberg of studies pointing to long-term neurological damage from SARS-CoV-2 infections. Among the findings that were new to me: - Observations of Parkinsonism (distinct from Parkinson's disease) following acute Covid-19 — similar to the cases after the 1918 flu pandemic documented in Oliver Sachs's Awakenings. - Concerns about a possible coming wave of Alzheimer's disease as post-Covid sequelae.https://archive.is/20250304162253/https://www.bloomberg.com/explainers/does-covid-lead-to-dementia-how-the-coronavirus-affects-your-brain#LongCovid

@Utah44 @TonyStark Apparently the Air Force goes over the plane before putting it into service as AF 1. If anyone competent is allowed on that inspection team, they ought to be able to find & disable spyware & bugs.

@GottaLaff Just back from that rally. I'm guesstimating 5,000, which is less than was predicted before the political terrorist acts, but still pretty impressive.

Our new neighbors. There were four young raccoons living in the tree next door. The mother was killed in the road but the kits soldiered on. They seem to have invited two friends to join the party: definitely six of them in residence now. This video, captured from my kitchen window, shows three of the kits heading out for a night of foraging.#raccoon

@futurebird Yeah they are fine. We're all rooting for them, though they can in general be pests in an urban environment like this. A few years back somebody (raccoons? squirrels?) gnawed good-sized access holes in several of the trash containers in the alley. Pretty impressive. Thick PVC.

myrmecophagination >> carcinizationThe anteater lifestyle has evolved over a dozen separate times in only 66 million years. Compare to the internet-notorious habit of life to evolve into crabs: that happened only five times over more than 200 million years.https://www.science.org/content/article/things-keep-evolving-anteaters-odd-animals-arose-least-12-separate-timeshttps://academic.oup.com/evolut/article-abstract/79/10/2315/8155241?redirectedFrom=fulltexth/t @mitch Cc: @futurebird

@tomjennings Sounds like you are converging on something like what Time Machine does: "...backs up your computer and keeps local snapshots and hourly backups for the past 24 hours, daily backups for the past month[,] and weekly backups for all previous months. The oldest backups and any local snapshots are deleted as space is needed."

@tomjennings @mathowie A while back an elderly neighbor in Massachusetts told a tale of her aunt riding streetcars from Massachusetts to Ohio, apparently for a single fare and repeated transfers. This might have been early in the XXth.

@tomjennings @mathowie That's fascinating in the details: for example that three young women spent $100 on food over two months.
