This is unfortunate, IMHO. https://searchtodon.social/Adventures-in-Mastoland.htmlThe fediverse needs to get right with the fact that by design it has been created to push content beyond the reach and beyond the boundaries of intention by post authors. This was a good actor who approached the problem respectfully and with attempts to address community concerns that had been brought up in the past (and IMHO found good solutions for them.)#search #controversy

The fediverse built something great, invited the world to come in and play, and then says "no not like that."This is not the way.Things are going to be built. You aren't always going to agree with the goals of a project. But if the community slams everyone who does something they don't agree with, you're going to have only bad actors who are not going to tell you when they're doing something.

Its clear that better search in particular is something many people want. Its clear that the search facilities built into mastodon in particular do not cut it, and yes, we all know about elasticsearch. In the past people have had the luxury of posting without having to worry about the reach of content. That was incidental. In fact, the only thing you were guaranteed was that if your server was federated, your content was beyond your control.

I don't have a lot of good solutions here. I want to see people's preferences respected, of course. But operating as though you're guaranteed those preferences in a situation where you've deliberately put your content out of your direct control, as we all do daily, is foolish. The masto/fediverse world needs to get right with this and start building in facilities to allow responsible growth, post haste. Or someone else will, in a way you almost certainly won't like.

@Jaden2 growing up in hattiesburg, ms in the 70s & 80s, my school district was the subject of a desegregation decision by SCOTUS in 1986 i think. Its been decades and there are still parts of the south that are effectively segregated.

@mekkaokereke Most White folks could learn a thing or two. Nobody wants to get lumped in with neonazis and the KKK. (well, except for the obvious case of people who ARE those things). Ego gets in the way of accepting that we maybe said or did something wrong and it’s ok to learn from it, apologize and move on. so we end up with “i’m clearly not racist so obviously YOU made a mistake understanding me.”it stings to get that feedback but it’s better than refusing to believe it.

@saraislet @kbg @mekkaokereke i’m not really fully up to speed on the jamie foxx thing but for my part “sorry you misunderstood me” is only half an apology —it puts the burden on the person or people harmed by the statement. rather, “i’m sorry i didn’t understand the impact of my words, and thank you for giving me an opportunity to learn so i can do better in the future.”

you know, the thing about regulations is that they exist because at some point in time, enough people felt strongly about something fucked up that wasn’t against the rules that collectively we decided to fix that. so when you hear someone complaining about “regulations” remember that. @mekkaokereke just as a data point i grew up in south mississippi in the 80s and 90s. for most of elementary school i was in catholic school and we learned about them there, though i can clearly remember one teacher in the fifth grade who insisted the civil war wasn’t about slavery (why it was important to make this point so forcefully to a fifth grader is another matter). they were taught in my public high school, but glossed over. certainly the states’ rights myth was taught more vocally.

amazing. #conservatives lose their shit over a candidate treating a dog the way they want to treat all immigrants and most democrats. #gophttps://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/apr/27/kristi-noem-trump-vp-book-killing-dog
