       I guess I should do an #introduction .So hello, Wandering Shop! I’m a longtime #sff reader and writer with a sf #webcomic (Sunset Grill), and hopes of one day getting a novel out the door. I’m an admin at the #SpiderForest Webcomic Collective and an occasional con volunteer. Unfortunately, all that got backburnered by motherhood and then derailed by the pandemic and related struggles to keep my family’s small farm afloat through it, BUT. I am enjoying the community here, even as a lurker!

       @Wolven It’s kind of dumb but also kind of not. The USDA has been withholding information like crazy through this whole mess and is still clearly more interested in protecting industry farms from the public than the public from anything at all. Distrust in institutions -> distrust in institutional products -> trying to source product from a non institutional source that you feel you can trust. Whether than trust is rational is a different equation.

       @COVID19_DISEASE And I mean, a smaller aggravation, but “up to” $1,500?The average dairy herd size in Texas — where all this likely started — is 1,000 head. Large herds (and this is likely running through large herds) are 10,000 head. The USDA offering somewhere between $1.50 and 15 cents PER COW for “biosecurity measures” is a joke. No one is doing that.

       @COVID19_DISEASE I mean, obviously, because they are more concerned with protecting the industry than protecting human health, I just….It’s frustrating that this “biosecurity” babble could sound reasonable to people outside the industry. But it’s bullshit! And the bulk tank panel! It’s RIGHT THERE! It could tell us how many herds this is really in and what mutation is looking like and whether this is really single source and —*froths*

       @ZachWeinersmith About the only boarding school book I found fascinating was Kipling’s Stalky & Co. Though not so much for the content as the realization of “oh, that’s why Kipling was Like That. He had British Empire boarding school PTSD. “
