#ChatGPT and its ilk are effectively a large-scale DDoS attack on not only specific tasks (such as teaching, software maintenance and fiction editing) but on human creative inspiration, sense of self and ability to make meaning of the universe.notice how they are- creating work for us rather than saving us work- automating inherently energizing and rewarding tasks such as making art rather than tiring and tedious tasks such as filing taxes- flooding social networks with generated content that makes it harder to connect with real humans and build community- distracting us with questions like “what if this machine is sentient?” which keep us from noticing and acting to prevent the suffering of actual humansthat thing where all search engines have become basically unusable because they’re stuffed full of AI garbage? i fear that’s about to happen to everything.i don’t believe this is necessarily intentional, but no machine that learns under capitalism can imagine another world.

i hope, though, that this exponential flood of inhuman content will finally make it impossible not to see that we all have inherent value regardless of what we produce or consume.care about the world because caring matters. make art because it matters. *you* matter. each of us contains infinities the machines will never understand. don’t let them try to tell you that you can be replaced; you can’t. none of us can.always ask yourself who benefits from your apathy, your overwhelm, your exhaustion, your loneliness.

still trying to figure out the right way to say this. in recent decades it has become easier and easier to fall into the trap of "i don't need to make this particular art, someone else has made it better than me". to get demoralized by comparing to the work of others.art-making AIs extrapolate that feeling to encompass the entire universe of potential art, so you can no longer avoid facing down and overcoming that fear. it's the Library of Babel, no longer the suspicion but the certainty that anything you could say has been said before.of course it's always been a lie; you have to make the thing anyway. the thing is particular to you. the thing is *specific*, as each of us is specific.we're all Pierre Menard, rewriting Don Quixote. which was Borges' point even then.

in a moment of lovely synchronicity i rediscovered this David Byrne quote today."It can often seem that those in power don’t want us to enjoy making things for ourselves—they’d prefer to establish a cultural hierarchy that devalues our amateur efforts and encourages consumption rather than creation."

some random thoughts on decay of historical twitter data:* all those old threadreader "unrolls" are gone* all the storify collections too* lots of those shortlinks are now broken or point to sites that are scammy, spammy or untrustworthy (c.f. https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2023/02/never-use-a-url-shortening-service-even-if-you-own-it/ )i don't know if i agree with the above post that there's a high risk of this being used for evil, but it's pretty easy to search your twitter data and delete, say, all gu dot com links en masse

btw, if you downloaded your twitter data, all links are shortened with t dot co, meaning they can't be expanded without visiting twitter. i used this tool to go through and fix them all so i know what was originally linked: https://github.com/timhutton/twitter-archive-parser

another fun thing i learned recently is that you can give the wayback machine a spreadsheet of URLs to cache using this tool: https://archive.org/services/wayback-gsheets/folks are locking down or deleting their twitter accounts every day, so i've been trying to preserve what is worth preserving to the extent that i can.

@simon i was a very late smartphone adopter. i held out for years. i could tweet from my T9 flip phone, and there were other services that let you get e.g. the next bus time via sms. the prospect of being able to read my emails instead of a book while actually *on* the bus held no appeal whatsoever, and as a photographer i was insufferably snobbish about the quality of those early smartphone cameras.i’m also a curmudgeon about AI at the moment, but only time will tell. i’ve also been a curmudgeon about a lot of things over the years that didn’t pan out.

it's sunday night and twitter is still a dumpster fire so i think it's finally time to re-post my all-time favorite tweet (iykyk)because the original context for this is lost to antiquity, i want to set the stage by sharing one of my favorite absurd stories about software. (🧵)

@calutron i have a sort of temporal vertigo this morning from imagining a chat with my 1995 self. “yeah, there are self-driving cars, AI is everywhere and neural implants are in human trials, but none of it is benefiting humanity in any way. in fact all of it is extremely tedious and annoying and some of it is actually dangerous”

the Elon / Zuck cage match thing is extremely obviously a piece of social media bait deployed because he didn’t like that we were all talking about Twitter defining cisgender as a slur and i am begging y’all to realize this stuff is on purpose. he knows he can put something like this out there to add chaff to a news cycle when there’s too much bad PR. the timing is not a coincidence!

proud of myself for having the executive function to acquire Halloween candy and decorate the porch this year. it’s the little things.i threw together a perfectly adequate pirate outfit with some random stuff from my closet and @dominic and i watched Triangle (2009) which blew my fucking mind. i am not much for horror movies but definitely recommend this one (and don’t read a thing about it first).the next holiday i am planning to actively observe is the solstice.

@futurebird @chrisamaphone nah this sentence is great… and i’m also of the opinion that many of these later examples are him intentionally calling back to the opening line of Neuromancer, and playing with the interesting fact that “the color of a television, tuned to a dead channel” had shifted from a static gray to an artificial blue over the course of those years, and could mean either depending on the age and assumptions of the reader.

@futurebird @chrisamaphone hey i’m not gonna yuck your yum but it got reposted into my feed & i wasn’t gonna just let it slide by 😂 particularly as someone who tried to imitate the deceptively unadorned style of Gibson et al in my misspent cyberpunk youth. not that every sentence or even book of his is a polished gem, but in cases like this, i think the misdirection (you can’t say the sky is “sky-blue”! but wait, what he’s saying is it looks artificially, unnaturally so) are entirely the intent
