Heineken launched stout to replace Guinness (withdrawn last year) for Russian markethttps://www.businesspost.ie/news/heineken-launched-stout-to-replace-guinness-for-russian-market/<< #Heineken can spin this all they want, but they are shamefully operating in a sanctioned state and developing new products to protect their investment. No one in #Ireland , or anywhere else that suppprts #Ukraine 's sovereignty, should drink #Heineken . This also shows how weak the sanctions are for many big companies operating in #Russia .

If Apple won't abide by EU market rules, they should be banned. It is that simple. https://www.t3.com/news/apple-is-trolling-the-eu-over-usb-c-on-the-iphone-15-again

@zleap Absolutely, it's all big tech. Anti competitive tendencies have been indulged for far too long. (Everyone, when learning about EU competition law, has a how-the-hell-is-Apple-compliant-with-that moment.)Big tech now expect to argue against legislation or rulings and, if they lose, just avoid the repercussions or draw out the implementation until the effect is lost.

@zleap on defamation, in all forms, the main problem is that the easier you make it, or the more powerful the remedies, the more powerful folk will use it to suppress criticism - either directly or indirectly e.g. astro-turfing or encouraging litigation by others. As for going after service providers, that certainly needs considered. IMHO, "safe harbour" provisions should be immediate forfeit if it is shown that your policing is inadequate (see current Twitter as a prime example).

@shoq for a lot of people, including some really big groups of people, current Twitter (with all its problems) is still a lot more welcoming and interesting than Mastodon. Many that will argue against this, but I bet you can roughly characterise said many as white, not young, and left-leaning.

Whilst ignoring people at danger at sea is mainly awful from a moral or humanity viewpoint, it is also entirely illegal. See:https://blogs.law.ox.ac.uk/research-subject-groups/centre-criminology/centreborder-criminologies/blog/2020/03/duty-rescue#:~:text=There%20is%20a%20duty%20pursuant,felt%20moral%20obligation%20among%20seafarers." Non-assistance to refugees and migrants at sea is not a legal option "@sinabhfuil

@kravietz @sinabhfuil Three simple questions:1) Are the lives of those on board in danger (if "no", how many days should we wait until you could say "yes")?2) Do you support international law both of the sea and for refugee? 3) If "yes" to 1) and 2), why are you against them asserting their legal rights?

@kravietz @sinabhfuil Well, the questions were certainly selected designed to make a point, but which specific question do you think is unfair?100 m offshore is still in the UK and too close to assume danger or a US-capable vessel (your scenario covers kidnapping), hence my answer is "no". However, if it helps: for a US-destined vessel picking up people in distress 100 m into international waters (the vessel being unable/unwilling to stop elsewhere) the answer is "yes".

@kravietz @sinabhfuil that comes back to my original questions. If the implication is that the rescued vessels are not really in distress, then this demands reasoning and distinguishing criteria. Otherwise, the legal obligations of asylum and rescue would be meaningless. To break the loop, remember how people get into a state is irrelevant to their right to claim asylum in the state.

@kravietz @sinabhfuil you are mixing up the actions and causes that lead to obligations with the obligations themselves. Undoubtedly, human trafficking should be tackled, but not by refusing basic legal protections.Modern medical facilities assist middle-class illegal drug use by providing a safety net. However, you would not (I assume) argue doctors should refuse to help an ODing patient, just to damage the illegal drug trade.

@zleap @kaffando @mercedesallen Hungary does a hell of a lot loss at the ECHR than the UK.In 2021, the rate of finding against Hungary was 94% (the UK's rate is 58%). Admittedly, in the UK, this is hidden because the UK press massively focuses on rulings against the UK.

@zleap @kaffando @mercedesallen no problem at all. Here's are some relevant source links in case I have overlooked some crucial aspect.https://www.echr.coe.int/Documents/Facts_Figures_Hungary_ENG.pdfhttps://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-8049/

@zleap @kaffando @mercedesallen alas, it often comes down to the funding. If rape victims were backed by pharma companies, there would be a hell of a lot more legal challenges.

Two #environmental protesters who disrupted traffic for 17 hours jailed for over five yearshttps://www.lbc.co.uk/news/just-stop-oil-protesters-climbed-dartford-crossing-bridge-jailed/<< a stark demonstration of how successfully the UK gov. weaponises the judiciary against protest. For example, this is far longer than the typical sentence when a cyclist is murdered using a car.#green #law

There is nothing wrong whatsoever with the EU's data protection law, including the GDPR. There is, however, a screaming lack of backbone in all the EU member states to enforce this law against bigTech. We need centralized systematic policing of the national enforcement, not new EU laws that member states will also ignore.Laws without enforcement, and/or without resources for policing and enforcement, are just political back-patting. #eu #privacy #bigtech #data #law

@Tupp_ed I never actually realized "removed" could go up a generation. You taught a 42 yo a brand new thing.
