@ParadeGrotesque that's a fair question to ask, and not one I know the answer to.Your assertion in OP though is misleading and dangerous for Mozilla in the long run.

@ParadeGrotesque read the quote again. It's not a matter of covering expenses, but where those expenses go.

@byron even that won't work - of course no one's going to let someone invade their private life just to make a point. See my post. What would work is really understanding where one is coming from.Recommend reading https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=998565

"Hackernews almost completely ignores this obvious spam in their absolute panic to explain to anyone who will listen that it is simply not possible for computer programmers to take any responsibility whatsoever for anything that they do because they are helpless children who have been completely stripped of agency by project managers or executives or whoever happened to be passing by."Us software engineers need to learn to own our mistakes, and it's consequences.http://n-gate.com/hackernews/2020/08/14/0/

@byron I think we agree partially. I don't think the "nothing to hide" implies "I don't have secrets" but rather "I'm not important for my secrets to be spied on". And that's where privacy advocates and enthusiasts have failed (in terms of communication). We haven't connected the dots of surveillance, technology, and power balances well enough. "China" is still abstract in most of the world.

@byron I should've been verbose - what is happening in regards to surveillance (and related human rights abuses) is abstract for the western world

This articulates my frustration with the cognitive dissonance of people who know that Big Tech is bad but continue to embolden it.https://om.co/2020/09/10/in-convenience-we-trust/"Perhaps, deep down, we are aware of our hypocrisy, which informs our expressions of outrage. The tweets, the hot takes, podcasts, and talking heads on — everything is theater. We are simply distracting ourselves from ourselves, avoiding the feeling that we are ultimately powerless when it comes to meaningfully influencing the outcome. "

"No content moderation system is going to be perfect. Humans won’t be perfect, AI won’t be perfect. Short of shutting it down entirely ― which can be a net positive for humanity ― what may work is to limit the reach of any content, especially dangerous content across its network."https://goel.io/facebook-deception
