@lauren I liked the book when I was a teenager, especially the abrupt ending. But I was as deeply uncomfortable with its portrayal of sex and male/female relationships as I was with men spanking women to keep them in line in Heinlein’s early work. And I was 14 when I first read them. There are so many aspects of rape culture just taken for granted. I didn’t know what rape culture was when I was 14, but when I reread it a few years back I could see it clearly.

@lauren Let’s take a network engineer with little to no expertise in AI, ML, & computational linguistics and drill him about those topics for most of an interview. smdh

@Wolven “Everything I need from you fits on that piece of paper.” Brutal but vulnerable. Amazing stuff. Are you reading Kali Simmons recaps? They help me cross the cultural gaps. https://www.vulture.com/article/reservation-dogs-recap-season-3-episode-9-eloras-dad.html

@Wolven @mmitchell_ai Anyone know how that works? How does DNA Relative expose your genome when a relative finds you?

@futurebird This is a seriously cool idea that I'd love to see. There are very few SF stories that imagine radically different tech stacks for aliens.Heinlein's early "Future History" juvenile Space Cadet featured amphibian Venerians who had a catalytic-chemistry based stack presumably because they never had fire.

@futurebird The design kind of reminds me of subway tokens! Imagine issuing themed tokens like this for kids to get to school!

Only 57 more chapters in War & Peace and 27 of those are epilogue. I'm not sure he's gonna wrap up every character's arc. If he leaves Sonya dangling, I'm going to build a time machine to go kick his ass. @bookstodon

I am something of a free immigration advocate across all borders, but if we're going to have prioritization, it should be cuisine-based.You must bring recipes and share them. Maybe the meeting at the consulate is like an episode of GBBO. I'm open to ideas.

@futurebird @jiub Since Walgreens bought them, and now Walgreens is seeking to go private equity, my guess is that they are playing a game to spin these back out as soon as possible. I called on Walgreens 3 decades ago, when they were committed to serving the urban market. Having a licensed cometologist in each store was a tactic: female-presenting urban workers prioritized the store because it had what they needed to look good at work. Sad what happened.

@futurebird It is a lost opportunity. Once upon a time, drugstores like Walgreens aimed to be the one-stop neighborhood store on the way to work and the way home, with slightly higher prices/margins on things you might not ordinarily get at a drugstore but would because you didn't want to make multiple stops. Having a friendly professional who could sell you the right shade of eyeshadow was *important*.They completely screwed it up.

@futurebird @CStamp There was a scene at the end of the 1968 Planet of the Apes, not involving chemical analysis, where they looked at an artificial heart valve in a human grave as evidence of an ancient human technological civilization.
